Alice stared at the shelf. How could there possibly be so manyĀ kinds of the same thing? It wasnāt like they could all be different, was it? How could they be?Ā
She picked up the one she always got. The cheapest. Couldnāt go wrong with that. And with that, that was her shopping done. Alice wandered up to the tills and took her place in the queue.Ā

Handsome. Handsome?! Kenji was used to hearing that from full-grown adults, but hearing all this from the mouth of a child caused some unknown instinct to take the wheel. Where did she learn about things like that? Wasnāt she a little young? Furthermore, why and how did a kid of her apparent age know about hired assassins?!
He stifled an inappropriate bark of laughter, shaking with a barely audible wheeze.Ā āThanks for the compliment, but... donāt you have someone taking care of you? This is no time or place for someone of your age to be out unattended.ā he replied, hoping to dodge most of those questions.
With one more glance around, he deduced that this kid was probably lost.
"Plastic bags are the ghosts of supermarkets."
Sheād gotten used to Pinokoās occasional odd musings, but this one drew attention. Ghosts? Ridiculous. The nearby bag twisted and turned. As if dancing with some unseen force. Red eyes following. Not too long ago, sheād of struck it down at the mere allusion to the supernatural. Such things belong to urban legends and folktales.
But instead, her vector arms reached out with a lighter touch. Scooping up nearby, less animated plastic bags, she flung them. The psionic force thrusting them into the air. All whirling about. āDoes that make this a haunting?ā She asked wryly, a hint of amusement.

Oh.
Oh.
Eyeshadow brush still in hand, Lucy stared back at her handiwork. This⦠isnāt how she pictured it in her head. Granted, she was new to makeup. Mistakes were bound to happen. But this went beyond her anticipation. Bits of fallout clung to Pinokoās cheek, spattered across her too pink cheeks. The lipstick was lopsided. Her attempts at evening it out a disaster. About the only thing she did right were the brows. That, she imagined, was due to her barely touching them.
āAh,ā Lucy set the brush down. Instead reaching for a makeup wipe. āLet me just fix a few things.ā More like the whole thing.

āTo learn? Hm.ā Again, it made her think of her own abysmal education. It wasnāt that she thought of herself as stupid. Itās just⦠well, she missed out, didnāt she? Filling in the gaps of her education on her own. Easier said than done. There were subjects she struggled with. Math and science gave her trouble, many equations giving her a headache.
She rested her back against the wall behind her. āIs school⦠fun?ā She questioned, a glint of curiosity in her narrow, red eyes. Not that it mattered to her personally. She highly doubted thereād ever come a day where sheād be an official student again. Still, she wondered about if from time to time. If nothing else, itād fill the hours of the day.

Odd. The girl before her was so small. More like a doll than a human girl. Lucyās red eyes locked onto the other. The Diclonius easily loomed over the smaller girl, cutting a more intimidating figure. But the other, to her credit, did not shrink from her. She could easily just kill the girl in her path, but Lucy stood restrainedāfor now. Instead, she addressed the girl with a question. ā...Can I help you?ā
"You almost killed Pinoko. Sho no, it's not nice to meet you." (miracle-doll)
Why did it have to be a kid? Kenji had absolutely nothing against children, but somewhere along the line he apparently forgot how to act around them. He raised trembling, bandaged hands palms forward in what he hoped was an apologetic gesture, plastering an awkward grin on his face.
He towered over Pinoko and made no effort to correct this height discrepancy, but at least he had the presence of mind to look at her while he spoke.
āItās, ah, nothing more than a terrible misunderstanding. Happens all the time, right? Whatās most important is, uh, youāre not dead right now.ā he tentatively offered, immediately regretting his astounding word choice.
