Today’s images from from Dave Anderson in Raleigh, North Carolina, who just liberated this #Fiat600Multipla from a woodsy slumber, where it’d been sitting since 1968. The original #Multipla was a quirky proto-minivan, a shrink-down of the VW Type 2 concept onto Fiat’s tiny #Seicento platform. Its teardrop shape, tiny size, and unique, unmistakably #italian, style were completely at odds with conventional cars (and American tastes) - which is why (along with it’s lack of speed) they were virtually free as used vehicles for many years, until suddenly they were highly prized. The 600 was a small car for the masses and it sold in the millions, but a year into production #Fiat brought out the Multipla - meant for larger families, taxi and delivery work - the same mechanical pieces repackaged into a longer unibody that crammed three rows of seats into 139 inches of car - eat your heart out, Olds Custom Cruiser. A triumph of space saving, the body weld seams were on the outside - disguised by a drip rail that runs the length of the roof. The tiny spare tire fit under the passenger’s side of the dash. Like the #Fiat600 the 21hp 633-cc water-cooled four was out back. In #1960 the 600 was upgraded into the 600D, and the Multipla got those upgrades too, becoming the 797-cc 600D Multipla, with almost 20% more power. The little van (at first) weighed less than 1,500 lbs. dry, but still - few Multiplas ever got above 60mph unless they were barreling down a hill with a tailwind. But it wasn’t meant for speed - in the tight streets of Rome, it could transport four full-size adults and their stuff efficiently. The appeal was somewhat diminished on U.S. interstates, but Fiat sold it here from 1956 to 1961 - in numbers as small as the van itself. The more van-like 600T appeared in 1962 and eventually grew (with the 600) into a member of the 850 family, but the original continued in production until 1969 and was a popular cab in #Italy into the 1980s.
