after the festival’s conclusion, she’d nearly forgotten about her deal with minsook. ...which she knew seemed laughable because hello? — new. dog. but there were other dogs on her mind, other dogs to take care of and walk. all of them so very cute. you couldn’t blame her, really. so it wasn’t until her sweet tooth put her on autopilot straight to the pantry the other day that she finally remembered. the gummy bears tasted odd in her mouth—not necessarily because of the candy itself ( they were fine actually, delicious! ), but they tasted strange because she wasn’t supposed to be eating them. oops. eunbyul immediately spat out the half-chewed gummy bear—it was a red one, too, the ones she promised him especially—set it aside on a napkin for a proper burial, and mumbled her apologies.
she didn’t leave her room for the rest of the day.
minsook, though, didn’t need to know what happened. what was one missing gummy bear?? right? ....right? so she convinced herself that it was a honest mistake—which it was!—and should minsook notice, well, she’ll deal with that as it happens. and then karma slapped her upside the head.
say bye bye to your doggy !!
those words haunted her, aged her fifteen years in the span of minutes. and it hurt, ok, it absolutely did, but if it meant securing the existence of her future dog, then she’d be.....er....happy....to let minsook have her chocolate ice cream ( the one she meant to save for last ), as he wanted. it’s okay, eunbyul, you’ve sacrificed greater things than this. this will be worth it, don’t you worry.
she sniffed, occupying herself with shoving spoonfuls of another carton of ice cream in her mouth—strawberry—to soothe the ache in her heart. now all she could do was wait until the ice cream thief arrived.
