Tha Anna Matamala mion-eòlach air gnothaichean ceangailte ri cĂ nan agus eadar‑theangachadh ann an CatalĂąinia, gu h-Ă raid anns na meadhanan.  Bho 1996‑2007, bha i an-sĂ s ann an gnìomhachas telebhisein. Tha Anna a-nis ag obair mar Ă’raidiche ann an Departament de TraducciĂł i d'InterpretaciĂł, Oilthigh Autònoma de Barcelona. 1. Gà idhlig.tv (GTV)  How important to do you regard ésAdir, the linguistic support project for Televisió de Catalunya and other Catalan media, within the context of language development?
Anna Matamala (AM):  The web portal Ă©sAdir, run by the Catalan Corporation of Audiovisual  Media (CCCM), is an essential tool for translators, language experts, editors, and all people working with Catalan, especially in the media.  It offers an enormous wealth of resources and a powerful search tool. Â
Catalan television has worked a lot on creating a language model  and in acknowledging the various registers of language in use beyond the norm, and has generated a series of  recommendations that can be easily consulted by everyone.
As a result, it is the perfect tool for those interested in language in use. It is  one of the first resources I recommend to my students.
 2. GTV: What is ésAdir's role within the wider framework of linguistic and corpus development? Is there a hierarchy of organisations and initiatives in Catalunya?
AM: Yes, the Catalan language authority is the Institut d'Estudis Catalans  (IEC). And I think that the work of the Catalan academy and the work of other language stakeholders (such as the Catalan Television with  ésAdir) is complementary. As I see it, the IEC establishes the norm, in  terms of lexicon, pronunciation and grammar, but then other agents adapt it to their specific needs.
Just to give an example, when I teach audiovisual translation to my  students I insist that, first of all, they must know the norm but then - and this is as important as the  norm -  they must adapt their translations to the client's requirements  (the Catalan Television, for instance). These requirements may coincide with the norm or may break it to make the language closer to the audience or more  credible in a certain context.
3. GTV: Within the Catalan media sector, do issues exist with regard to practical implementation of language guidelines?
AM: ésAdir offers recommendations but of course the implementation varies depending on the type of programme. For instance, a dubbed film is subject to a series of controls that guarantee that the  final product follows the guidelines. If it doesn't, a retake will  normally be required until the highest quality is met.  This cannot be done when a  journalist is talking live. Domestic [air an dèanamh ann an Catalùinia] productions are often dealt with  differently too.
For me the most important issue is offering a flexible language  which is "adequate", rather than "correct". And this is the spirit of  ésAdir!
This implies that depending on who is talking, the degree of formality,  the context, the programme, etc., the language register may vary. But please do not misunderstand me: this does not mean that everything  can be accepted.
4. GTV: What kind of approaches are taken with regard to issues such as standardisation or the representation of different dialects? Does everyone work well together on such matters?
AM: I have mainly been involved in dubbing projects and in those products geographical dialects are not transferred. That is a generalised convention. It would not be credible to translate different dialects from the  original into different dialects in the target language. However, in domestic productions and in the news the presence of geographical dialects is higher, although not generalised.  ésAdir appear to be good in dealing with such matters.Â
5. GTV: If the Catalan language is to flourish within the media for the remainder of the twenty-first Century, what are the main challenges?
AM: I think that the focus should not only be on traditional broadcasting  but also other platforms where younger generations are more and more present.  I am thinking of videogames, social media,  etc. Even when watching a traditional TV programme, people are often holding a "second screen" and interacting. This is  where the presence of Catalan should be fostered. And, of course, with everything that surrounds the content - advertising, but also the electronic programming guides, for instance.
