A dam broke open releasing 60 million liters of toxic dump waste from an ore mine into one of the biggest rivers of southeastern Brazil. The closest communities around the town of Mariana - Minas Gerais were devastated by the toxic mud tsunami. There was not a single emergency horn to warn the citizens.
The news are very obscure and definitely don’t give us a real extension of the damage. The word from locals and specialists is that the Rio Doce (Sweet River) is dead now, as the mud full of iron ore, mercury, arsenic, lead and others heavy metals PAVED its way through the river. There was a makeshift campaign last weekend called 'Noah's Arch' trying to transfer as many fish as it was possible to local lagoons and ponds from where the mud didn't pass yet. Where it did nothing can survive for the water can no longer mix to oxygen.
I have no idea how this news is coming to your country in a week so eventful but increasing pressure and awareness about it will definitely help!!
