(These are quick overall summaries of my reactions to Ryuki, shorter than the usual recaps for my own sanity's sake. Hope you enjoy!)
Mirror Number One, within which: our paranoia of reflective surfaces begins, cute hats are had and lost, and Shinji needs to learn he's not in a Super Sentai.
Because Yu-Gi-Oh just wasn't dramatic (or marketable) enough;
let's quickly run through a card game trauma with Ryuki!
.
Arc One: 01 & 02:
And the Mirror Paranoia begins...
Okay, here we are at the beginning! Aaaand Jamie and I can already tell that we're gonna be completely paranoid of reflective surfaces by the end of it, just like poor Used-To-Own-Dragon-Maybe Apartment Guy. WELP.
OKAY MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T MAKE CONTRACTS WITH DRAGONS THEN, SHINJI. ... Anyway, our protagonist, Shinji (... get in the robot?), is... okay, I guess? I mean, he seems happy enough, though he's also a massive derp and has Shonen-level Rash Decision-Making skills. I have it on good authority that this season is one long experiment in "how badly can we break a man" though, so I'm trying my best to not get attached to him. I'M PROBABLY GONNA FAIL.
Meanwhile, our... I guess I'll call him our secondary? He's probably our secondary. Ren and his girlfriend Yui are cute, anyway, though they could stand to give our hero more info than "there are monsters in another world, which kill humans, and with these card-case-things we can go there and kill them, so long as we contract one of them to ourselves to get superpowers." Because, c'mon, there's GOTTA be more to it than that, right? I'm pretty sure this season's supposed to have a Rider War somewhere. Pretty sure that's a thing. Maybe you guys oughta tell him about it. JUST SAYIN'. ... Also, Yui needs to put her cute hat back on. THAT HAT WAS ADORABLE. GET IT BACK, YUI.
And then we have our side-characters, which... uh... Yeah, Journalist Lady is gonna get herself SO killed one of these days, Secretary/Webmaster? Lady is... weird, and Boss Man just kinda exists. ALSO THEIR OFFICE IS SO FULL OF REFLECTIVE SURFACES, HOLY WOW I TAKE IT BACK, IT'S NOT JUST JOURNALIST LADY, YOU WILL ALL END UP DEAD
Sooo yeah. Overall, not a bad opening -- we've got some characters to be interested in, and enough of the plot to go on for now. Still a lot of open questions on what the Mirror World is really for, where the monsters come from, and why the Mirror World exists at all, but hey, I suppose we've got a whole season to tackle those. SO ONWARD WE GO
Ridiculous Theory of the Arc:
Apartment Guy is Shinji from the futureeeee, wooOOooOOoo~
IT BEGINS
.
Arc Two: 03 & 04:
WHY WAS THERE A MIRROR IN THAT STAIRWELL
WHY
THERE WAS NO REASON TO HAVE A MIRROR THERE
AAAAAAA
AND WHY ARE YOU SMILING ABOUT THAT?! ... So, uh, yeah. We get a bit more info on things this arc -- Yui's ability to see the mirror world without having any cards of her own is apparently just A Thing she can do, and her brother actually created the cards, inspired by her ability. But then he vanished, apparently so that he could appear in mirrors to Shinji and let him know that where Riders are concerned "THERE CAN BE ONLY OOOOONE [/highlander]". Seems Legit.
(p.s.: Agito's calling with their three Riders, they would like to laugh in your face, Mirror Man)
Meanwhile, there's a small herd of monsters terrorizing an elementary school, some misunderstandings involving Ren's bat and said elementary school's students, and even MORE misunderstandings on Shinji's part, who seems to think he's in a Super Sentai rather than a tragic Highlander-meets-Hunger-Games-(maybe?) Kamen Rider season. No, Shinji, you can't grow to trust and befriend Ren and be hero-partner-buddies. Or well you could, but something tells me this won't work out well. Ren's got the right attitude of "GDI LEAVE ME ALONE DORK" here, I think.
Hm. That about sums things up, but I've got some space here, so lemme talk about the designs, because why not! Thus far, this season looks... kinda weird, for a Kamen Rider. Not bad, mind you, just kinda weird. Ryuki's design is really weird to me, and I'm not sure I'll ever grow to like it, though who knows.
On the flipside, Knight's design is pretty neat -- just not terribly Kamen Rider-like. (Although, uh. A darkly-colored knight with a bat-motif/companion and a cape (sometimes)... HMM I CAN'T IMAGINE WHY THIS FEELS FAMILIAR :V) The bikes are super-cool though, hopefully they use them more in future! (Though something tells me they won't.)
Ridiculous Theory of the Arc:
THE MONSTERS ARE PEOPLE. Failed Riders, to be more specific. Because Tragedy. ... Okay admittedly 90% of this theory is because of a Ryuki/Madoka fanart I saw in passing once (which uh, was just the Riders and girls posing together), but still! It could happen! Totes legit theory here!
Well if you can't trust random mirror-men, then who CAN you trust?
.
Arc Three: 05 & 06:
WHY DID YOU KEEP DIGGING AFTER YOU FOUND THE GLASSES. WHY.
We have our first new Rider, yaaaay! Aaaand we also have our first Rider-death. WELP. At least this one was kind of a jerk, so no-one cares~
More specifically, he was a crooked cop even before he got a Deck, and after he got a Deck he used it to take out on a partner that wanted more money (buring him in the wall of his shop, as you see above), and then basically just let his monster (a crab) feed on whatever it wanted. And then Ren smashed his deck and the monster fed on him. WELP.
Farewell, Scissors, we hardly knew ye (and that's okay).
Meanwhile, on the side of our actually-sticking-around-for-a-while Riders, Shinji spent this arc first trusting Scissors completely and letting him know everyone's identities, thus causing Scissors to kidnap Yui, try to get Ren run over, and also set up a trap to kill Shinji. (Not a very good trap -- it required that Shinji stand DIRECTLY UNDER A HUGE HANGING PALLET OF JUNK -- but still!) Ren... was not very amused by this, justifiably. GDI, SHINJI.
Shinji also still refuses to fight other Riders unless in strict self-defence, which continues to drive Ren up the wall, but uh... Ren? Seriously, bro, why are you so gung-ho about this whole Highlander/Hunger Games/Rider Funtime Extravaganza? And could anyone PLEASE explain to Shinji what the end goal is? Just sayin', at least 30% of why he won't fight other Riders is because no-one will tell him why he should want to. You're all lunatics.
Meanwhile, on the side-character side of things, Journalist Lady had an eyepatch for reasons (oookay) and spent most of her time in the hospital after being attacked by Scissors. She did at least call the cops on his nonsense, so uh, good job doing a thing there, Journalist Lady!
The other side-characters continue insane, and Shinji is staying at the office now because he got kicked out of his apartment. Sooo yeah. That... all happened!
Ridiculous Theory of the Arc:
Mirror Man chose all these people to be Riders purely because they were awful people who he wanted to see killed. Shinji got his by accident, and Ren was chosen because Mirror Man was running out of truly awful people that he knew, so "mild jerk I guess" had to be good enough. HE'S JUST CLEANIN' UP THE CITY, BRO
... Also, I'm pretty sure Website Runner here doesn't actually have a script.
I think they just point a camera at her at tell her to do whatever.
