#mini peach

For tonight's breakdown, I'm covering Mini Mario, as well as two characters I just added to the roster tonight: Mini Peach and Mini Yoshi! Having just beat Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again!, I felt compelled to add these two to the roster, and Mini Mario was among the first 50 or so characters added. I figure it would be fitting if I tackle all three of them at once.

For Mini Mario, he's obviously based on the dual hammers the minis can use in the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series to ward off enemies. I had briefly considered going wild and making them these insane Transformers-esque mechs with hilariously unfitting designs, but I disregarded the idea pretty quickly. Maybe I'll put that in the "maybe some other character can have this" pile. I definitely feel like if I drew the hammers nowadays they would look better, my quality standard has risen in the year or so since I made this. But I don't think it looks terrible or anything.

Mini Mario, and the other minis for that matter, don't have a ton of design changes in terms of physical appearance. I felt like standard recolors of the toy models to match their team would suit them better, putting a bigger emphasis on their stronger weaponry to compensate for their fragility as toys. Plus in-universe it's probably real convenient to just paint over them when they get assigned to a specific team. Maybe some of them are sold off as exclusive bonus toys that become collector's items going for upwards of $100,000!

Anyway, next is Mini Peach. I don't have a ton to talk about here, as the parasol she uses is pretty obviously based on the one the real Peach uses. Specifically, it's based on when she ducks in Super Paper Mario to have protection against enemies. I also sorta based their ability to gain height with the parasol to perform high spikes on the Drizzlers from Splatoon's Salmon Run. Very clear opposites on the beauty - ugly scale.

Lastly is Mini Yoshi. Originally his pose was supposed to be more to the side, but it would be way too long to fit on the panel without making the image incredibly small, so I settled for a more diagonal angle. Mini Yoshi having a boxing glove on his tongue was something original, but the design for the tongue was actually based on the Ultra-Hand! While I didn't think about it while making it, this is the exact way the boxing glove is used by Genius Wario in Master of Disguise. So... I guess I can consider that a reference? Also, Low Blow's name is taken from the sentry of the same name in M+R. It was just a fitting name so I used it.

Peach sure has a lot of uhhhhh. Well I don’t wanna say “Impostors” but uh. Yeah. Peachette really threw me for a loop during that Direct, and I mean. Trust me I love Peachette immediately, she was super fun to draw. But.... what.... what is she. WHAT IS SHE NINTENDO. EXPLAIN. Also I love Pink Gold Peach dont @ me. All the characters in this image are very good characters. Thank you.
