Galisa stood in a room of crowded Archivists, all of them murmuring quietly to each other, peering at the center of the large underground room. It was hard to remember she was underground, with the intricate carvings in the pillars lining the walls, and the nicely tiled floor. But now that she had remembered, it only worsened her anxiety.
This was her first enchanting ceremony. She'd heard vague descriptions of it, and fanciful tales of how it looked. But it had never been properly detailed to her. It was always just out of her reach of understanding.
She hated not understanding something, and being thrust headfirst into it blind.
"Don't be afraid, Galisa." Archivist Fabian, her mentor, glanced over, smiling reassuringly. He was a tall, wiry man, taller than most of the other villagers, with short wavy pale blond hair. His Archivist uniform was wrinkled and askew per usual, his black vest's top button undone, and the poofed sleeves of the white shirt underneath long-since stained with red cuprite dust. That at least matched the red embroidery in his black vest, and the circular pin over his heart, with the Hiborish kon for cuprite. A sign of his Archivist Dedication.
Something she wanted the same of. Apparently, the path there included attending this ceremony, with all the other Archivists-in-training, with no idea of what exactly was to happen.
"Afraid? Psh, I'm not afraid," Galisa said, waving her hand and laughing nervously. "Just, wondering."
"About the ceremony," Fabian guessed, his smile turning to a knowing one, his eyes twinkling. "And trying to piece together what will happen so you can be prepared."
"How can I not?" she asked. "I'm entirely in the dark! Why must this be something of such mystery?"
"It's a well-kept secret for a reason, Galisa," Fabian said, but she paused as his smile fell for half a tick. "It's something that would be... detrimental, if more people knew about how it was done."
Galisa frowned, but before she could ask anything more, a bell rang from the center of the room, echoing on the limestone walls around them. She turned her attention to it, and the woman holding it Stored it into her reserve, making it disappear in black wisps. "Let the ceremony commence," she announced, before walking back into the crowd.
Behind where she'd stood was a large circle in the tiled floor, and at its edges sat over thirty pieces of lapis lazuli, each nearly the size of her head. Galisa's eyes widened—how did they get so many of them so large?—but her surprise heightened further as she saw a figure lying in an ornate bed, surrounded by stacks of books on the floor, in the center of the lapis circle.
It was Cleric Emmeline, wearing her purple and black robes that she often did. Her blond hair laid underneath her head, resting on the pillow with her eyes closed.
Was she asleep? Even more pressing, was she tethering herself? Here? Galisa started forward, towards the front of the crowd, ignoring the glares and Fabian's call after her. She'd thought the Cleric would have been directing the ceremony, not being in it.
Galisa made it to the front just as a bright green glow filled the room, making her and everyone else shield their eyes. Galisa squinted, looking for the source, only to freeze as she saw it was the lapis. Each stone had glowing green energy pulling itself from it, like rain droplets in reverse, before flitting about in the air above it like a confused wispyn. Eventually, the wisps shot towards the Cleric, whose body lurched as the energy melted into her body and disappeared.
Galisa's mind spun, her thoughts a whirlwind that she couldn't stop. The enchanting ritual was powered with Soul? That could somehow be stored within lapis lazuli? How was that even possible?! Soul only searched for living vessels—
—didn't it?
Galisa felt her heart start to race as more Soul entered Cleric Emmeline's body. Her muscles tensed, her fingers twitching at her sides as the life energy made her body restless, wanting it to move with its new strength and speed. Her eyes underneath their lids eventually started to glow the same bright green, the telling sign of a proper Soul Rush.
Galisa scanned the crowd, but all of them looked on with awe. They were all established Archivists. They knew what was going on.
But before she could ask any of them, Cleric Emmeline's body arched, her eyes flying open and glowing the brightest green Galisa had ever seen. Galisa saw then veins on her hands glow as well, the light shooting up her arms underneath her skin as her mouth opened in a silent scream.
Then, the light snuffed out. Cleric Emmeline collapsed onto the bed, and the room fell into a tense silence. Galisa's heart hammered in her chest. Where had the Soul gone? It couldn't have just vanished. It hadn't had anywhere to go, no movement to properly expend its energy.
No, she thought. There had been movement: the Cleric's body lurching, and her silent scream.
But had the Cleric's body burned through it all and used it up, in that one small movement? Galisa remembered on piece of information from the whispers she'd heard about the ceremony: it was a way to contact The Black. To ask for its magic, to enchant items with its power. Her eyes fell to the books surrounding the Cleric, then the bed the Cleric laid on, and in one horrific moment the pieces snapped into place.
The Cleric had tethered herself, tying her spirit to the bed via The Black. And the Soul had been fuel for her spirit, overloading her body with the life energy in order to follow that tether. To use it as a guide further into the mysterious void, then find her way back out.
The Cleric had intentionally shoved her spirit from her body.
For the time being, the body on the bed was a corpse.
