Hinata figured he'd have questions sooner or later. She'd been well aware that her actions would've warranted such. Especially considering they'd barely even had many one on one interactions.
"I... I wanted to try and save you because..." She took a deep breath, allowing her a moment to gather enough courage to actually put herself out there and admit to the feelings that she'd long tried to hide to no avail. "I love you, Naruto... a-and I couldn't bare to imagine a world without you in it."
She wasn't even sure if he'd take her seriously. She'd seen how obvious he'd been with his crush on Sakura. Another reason why she'd barely even done a thing to reveal her feelings earlier. That fear of rejection. Which probably didn't matter much now either, as it was still very much present.
A lot of things happened since the Pein Invasion, Konoha was reconstructing within the aftermath, and Naruto’s feelings were all over the place. As direct as it was, he wanted to know the truth once he managed to find Hinata. Somehow, she was never too far away for him to reach.
“I gotta be honest, I don’t think I really know, what love is,” Naruto admitted sheepishly. As much as he tried to impress Sakura, he knew she only had eyes for Sasuke. Beyond his own wishes, he wanted to bring Sasuke back to impress Sakura that way, too.
“But if it is when you can’t live without that special someone, and your heart hurts just thinking about it,” he tried to explain as he wrapped his head around the concept, hand clutching near his heart.
“Then I guess, I love you too, Hinata,” he spoke with mostly sincerity as he looked at Hinata directly. Yes, it was naïve for him to confess back to her like that, but he intended to show her beyond just words, show that he was genuine. Naruto had always stuck up for Hinata when others put her down, especially Neji. She worked so hard, maybe even harder than he did. So they both deserved to be happy, with each other.
“So, if it’s okay with you…” Unsure what to do next, Naruto approached Hinata to pull her into a hug. He could have snapped after finding out about Kakashi-sensei, but it was after seeing Hinata bleeding out in front of him. So, he wanted to become even stronger, to not experience that pain ever again. Maybe the hug was also him promising not to let her risk her life for him again.
Hinata, despite how shy she was, was always his cheerleader. Maybe that was what love was, and to have a girlfriend, to have someone always be in his corner in support.
