@nikushiimi asked:
'don't let them take me away again, please, please, please.' - baby sasuke in tt au :)
Carson's sullen glare feels like it's drilling holes in the side of his head from where he's folded away in the back of the cop car. They were magnanimous enough to uncuff him when his nose wouldn't stop bleeding twenty minutes ago. Sasuke hasn't left his side since they got here, alternating between crying silently and giving the officers a sullen glare, tucked under his arm with his cheek pressed to Kakashi's sore ribs.
Officer Cymba waves a hand to get his attention. Almost dazedly, Kakashi turns to blink at him, his grip shifting on Sasuke when the boy starts trying to hide further behind him.
"Yeah?" Kakashi asks.
"You good?"
"Fine," he replies flatly. Cymba gives him a skeptical look, which Kakashi ignores in favor of turning his dead eyed glare back to Carson, and running a careful hand over the back of Sasuke's head.
"We'll take him to jail tonight for drunk and disorderly," Cymba crosses his arms over his vest, looking like a puffed out hen. Kakashi thinks they went to high school together, maybe, but he finds that the more he tries to puzzle over it, the harder it is for him to remember. "And then, y'know. You gonna press charges this time, man? He's pretty..."
The hesitation makes him wince. He's pretty pissed, yeah- worse than Kakashi has seen him in a long time, maybe ever, now that the pain pills have run out and Kakashi told him he wouldn't get any more. Escalating when Sasuke had involved himself, trying to get in between them when Carson had gotten his hands around Kakashi's throat, drunk and high and nigh invincible with it. Carson had threatened to-
Well. Kakashi isn't one to let the law handle anything, but he figures a while in jail will cool him off. Not like any of his friends will bail him out, even if they had the money.
"Yeah," Kakashi sighs. Cymba's brows raise, but he gains control of his expression quickly, and pulls out a notepad to jot a few lines down.
"Great. We'll book him for battery, too. He'll be in for a few days, s'a Friday," the officer's eyes flicker to Sasuke. Kakashi's arm very carefully doesn't tighten around him, because he's willing Cymba to believe there's nothing out of the ordinary here. "You, uh... The kid alright? Willing to talk?"
Kakashi lifts his arm slightly, enough that Sasuke can't quite hide his head. "You wanna give the Lion King over there a witness interview right now?" Sasuke shakes his head, and Kakashi turns back to the other man. "We'll come into the station, um. If you want. But I think we just..."
Cymba isn't sympathetic to Kakashi, he knows that much, but he can tell he feels bad for the kid. "Yeah," he drawls. "We'll give you a call, alright? And- listen, man. You should get a restraining order or something."
Waving him off, Kakashi and Sasuke sit together in the dark on the stairs to the door as they watch the tail lights of the cop car fade through the trees, until they take the corner down the road and disappear entirely. Kakashi sniffs, spits a not insignificant amount of blood and snot into the weeds next to the stairs, and picks the kid up to take him inside.
Sasuke sniffles, tucks his wet face into Kakashi's throat.
Guilt twists in his gut. Wars with exhaustion.
"Sorry, kid," Kakashi murmurs, running a hand down his back and then shifting his grip on him to open the door. "You alright?"
His voice is wan, fragile when he answers: don't let them take me away again, please, please, please.
"Nobody's takin' you away, kid," Kakashi reassures him, his voice brittle. "I won't let 'em, alright? You're stuck with me as long as you'll have me, and probably a while after that too. C'mon, let's get you a juicebox."
His back aches with the kind of soreness that tells him he'll be pissing blood for a while, but at least he'll have some time to... he doesn't know. Maybe try and get his head on straight.
Digging around in the fridge produces a single white grape juice box, which he hands off to Sasuke to fuss with as he sets him on the counter next to the sink. Bends over, turns on the faucet, and ducks his head under the running water. Lets it run.
