Book Review: "The Siren of Sussex" by Mimi Matthews
The Belles of London is a four book Victorian Romance series by Mimi Matthews. I found this in an ad on Goodreads while I was writing a review for one of the Heartland books. I RARELY buy books off ads, but the cover of this book was intriguing to me as I searched for my next horsey read. This series seemed promising, since it combined two of my favorite literary elements, history and horses. I…

Many thanks to Laurel @Austen Prose for tour invite and publisher, author, NetGalley for review copy. John Eyre: A Tale of Darkness and Shadow by Mimi Matthews Publication Date : July 20th 2021 Publisher : Perfectly Proper Press Genre : historical fiction, Gothic romance, paranormal fiction Pages : 364 Ratings :⭐⭐⭐⭐ was intriguing and interesting gothic reimagining of Jane Eyre and Dracula that revolved around school master John Eyre, his employer Bertha Rochester and her secrets, and darkness that lurked around Thornfield Hall. The story was about light after dark, good vs evil, will and determination, betrayal, love, friendship, greed, women empowerment, endurance, and trust. Setting of Thornfield and Nosht-Vulk in Senniskali village, Bulgaria was best part of the book. It kept the sense of anxiety alive throughout the story. Its descriptions were vivid and truly gothic. It felt like character itself. Another aspect I enjoyed was the time period. Elaborate description of dressing, places, society, beliefs and Christianity took me back to Victorian era and it was easy to imagine what life people might have and how they lived, position of women in world of men, how less their opinion mattered, and importance given to religion and superstition. Overall, John Eyre was interesting, suspenseful, and atmospheric gothic historical fiction and reimagining of Jane Eyre and Dracula. I recommend this if you like, Classic retelling/reimagining/fanfiction Less romance and more focus on plot and characters Developed characters Gothic plot atmospheric and vivid setting Slow to moderate pace Beautiful writing Historical fiction set in Victorian era QOTD: Which Classic retelling/reimaging/retelling you enjoyed most? #JohnEyre #MimiMatthews #PerfectlyProperPress #historicalfiction #Gothicromance #paranormal #fiction #blogtour #austenprose #bookstagrammer #bookishmom #reader #bookaesthetic #bookblogger #bookstagramfeature #igread #BookReview #bookblog #BooksTeacupandReviews #momwhoreads #bookreviewblog #Indianbookstagram #IndianBookBlogger #bookreviewercommunity #bookcommunity #bookgram #bookrec #bookishlife #ipreview via @preview.app (at Ahmedabad, India) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRdx-xZLWlh/?utm_medium=tumblr
Gruff and grim, Justin Thornhill, does not seek or even welcome romance in his life. So when his well wishers suggest him to get married, he sets the terms of the marriage more like a business deal with no scope of romance. His lawyer and steward place a Matrimonial Advertisement in the newspapers based on his criteria. But Helena Reynolds, the lady who responds to his ad, is nothing like the woman he seeks out to marry. For one, she has stirred up several emotions inside of him which he does not wish to acknowledge let alone encourage. For Helena, however, this marriage is nothing more than being with a man who would be able to protect her and be kind to her. They both have secrets that they wish to keep to themselves but destiny works out in a different manner. Check out the review of this Victorian romance and see if it's for you.
