I'm sure I'm either wrong or never delved deeper into Jack Sparrow lore, but I rewatched Dead Man's Chest and wondered who the people in the river were at the end when the group makes their way back to Tia Dolma's house. They all held candles in vigil and one woman was silently crying. Who were these people?
I know that Sparrow was branded by Beckett because he freed a slave ship (as evident in At World's End when he tells Beckett that people aren't cargo) and that it becomes the ship that Davy Jones raises up from the depths to become The Black Pearl. It's also evident that he saved many people from the ship and it would explain why Davy Jones claims that Jack's soul is worth 100 souls. He saved 100 people off a slave ship, whether it was through a bargain with Jones or he freed them while the ship was going down.
I think all the people that came out to stand in the river with a candlelight vigil were the men and women Jack saved from that ship and he helped them get to safety in Tia Dolma's swamps where they could be free.
It's a good use of "show, don't tell" if that's the case and such a small detail that I've overlooked for 20 years. Again, I may be way off the mark, but in the spirit of storytelling, that's what I choose to believe.
