Loving Mildred!
Habt ihr schon mal vom Loving-Day gehÜrt? Der ist nämlich heute, am 12. Juni, und wird in einigen Städten der Vereinigten Staaten gefeiert. Diesen Feiertag haben wir einer starken Frau zu verdanken, die einst nicht aufgegeben hat, um ihre wahre Liebe zu kämpfen.
Ihr Name ist Mildred Loving, und ich wĂźrde sie euch heute gerne vorstellen.
Mildred wurde im Jahr 1939 geboren. Im Virginia der 50ger Jahre lernt sie Richard Loving kennen. Sie ist damals elf Jahre alt, Richard bereits siebzehn. Die beiden verlieben sich ineinander. Als Mildred achtzehn Jahre alt ist, ist das erste Kind unterwegs. Sie und Richard heiraten im Juni 1958 in Washington, D. C. statt - denn im Bundesstaat Virginia ist die "gemischtrassige" Ehe verboten.
Aber kurz nach ihrer RĂźckkehr in ihre Heimatstadt Central Point im Caroline County werden sie mitten in der Nacht vom Sheriff und zwei Hilfssheriffs aus dem Bett gezerrt und ins Gefängnis gesteckt. Die Polizei hat einen anonymen Hinweis auf ihre âverboteneâ Ehe bekommen. Man verurteilt sie zu einem Jahr Haft wegen VerstoĂes gegen das sogenannte Rassenintegrationsgesetz. Unter der Voraussetzung, dass sie das County und den ganzen Staat Virginia sofort verlassen und in den nächsten 25 Jahren nicht mehr gemeinsam aufsuchen, wird ihnen jedoch Strafaussetzung gewährt.
Dem frisch getrauten Ehepaar bleibt keine Wahl. Die beiden ziehen zu Mildreds Cousin und dessen Frau nach Washington, wo sie mehrere Jahre verbringen. Es folgen insgesamt drei weitere Kinder. Zur Geburt des ersten reisen sie noch heimlich nach Virginia, damit Richards Mutter Mildred beistehen kann, doch schon kurz nach der Geburt steht ein Sheriffs vor der TĂźr. Eine Gefängnisstrafe droht nun â doch zum GlĂźck kann ein Anwalt diese mit Hilfe eines kleinen Tricks abwenden. Â
Die Situation scheint ausweglos zu sein. Mildred und Richard glauben schon, nie mehr in ihren Heimatstaat zurĂźckkehren zu kĂśnnen. Doch Mildred gibt nicht auf und schreibt im Jahr 1963 einen Brief an den Justizminister Robert F. Kennedy, um ihn um UnterstĂźtzung zu bitten. Die American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) nimmt sich des Falles an, zunächst freilich bestätigen die Gerichte in Virginia noch einmal das Verbot einer gemischtrassigen Ehe â schlieĂlich habe Gott "die Rassen WeiĂ, Schwarz, Gelb, Malaisch und Rot" nicht ohne Grund auf verschiedenen Kontinenten verteilt.
Erst im Jahr 1966 wendet sich jedoch das Blatt. Das Life Magazine bringt einen Artikel Ăźber das Ehepaar unter der Ăberschrift "Das Verbrechen, verheiratet zu sein". Die Zeitschrift schreibt: "Loving gegen Virginia kann der nächste historische Meilenstein in der Geschichte der Menschenrechte sein". Der Fall landet beim Obersten Gerichtshof von Amerika. âSagen Sie dem Gericht, dass ich meine Frau liebeâ, sagt Richard kurz vor dem Prozess zu dem von der ACLU mit dem Fall beauftragten Anwalt Bernard Cohen.
Am 12. Juni 1967 entscheidet der Oberste Gerichtshof einstimmig, ein Verbot von EheschlieĂungen aufgrund von Rassenmerkmalen sei verfassungswidrig. Zum Gedenken an das Urteil wird in den USA immer am 12. Juni der "Loving Day" begangen.
Richard Loving starb nur wenig später im Jahr 1975 an den Folgen eines Verkehrsunfalls, den ein betrunkener Autofahrer verursacht hatte. Mildred Loving wurde bei dem gleichen Unfall schwer verletzt und verlor ihr rechtes Auge. Sie heiratete kein zweites Mal und starb 2008 im Alter von 68 Jahren
Mehrmals wurde die Geschichte der beiden verfilmt, unter anderem von Jeff Nichols im Jahr 2016. Der Film trägt den Titel Loving und wurde mit Ruth Negga und Joel Edgerton in den Hauptrollen besetzt.
Normalerweise sind mir Feiertage nicht so wichtig, aber der Loving Day liegt mir am Herzen. Deshalb wird heute Kuchen gebacken in Gedenken an Mildred Loving, die sich weder von Vorurteilen noch vom Gesetz unterkriegen lieà und darum gekämpft hat, mit ihrem Mann in ihrem Heimatstaat verheiratet sein zu dßrfen!
