The Grandalor has become much greater than the sum of its parts. So many poor castoffs brought together to form such a cohesive unit!
////
True, the Grandalor has become more than the sum of its crew. That's because they have a solid core of loyalty to Barad and a deep respect bordering on love for Tanlin. The combination drives them to do their best
A bit of a nagging question... I think you mentioned a while back that there are around 250,000 Great Sea Dragons. Are all of them as important as those names here, such a Mecat, Iren, et al? Or are many of them just going about their lives with little to do with the humans or ecosystem?
////
The five that we meet in the stories, Blind Mecat, Dark Iren, Frath, Dari and Horen are the Ecological Council of the Great Sea Dragons.
The rest of the Great Sea Dragons don't have anything to do with humans because it's against their laws. Humans are a recent and important addition to the Ecology. Contact with them is rigidly supervised.
The Great Sea Dragons learned a hard lesson 2 1/2 to 3 million years ago, which is in the living memory of many of them. Sinking the land was a disaster from which they are still recovering. As far as they are concerned, NOTHING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE ECOLOGY.

A shaky hand beat the hailing drum of the Carsis Rising, âWe surrender! Â We canât get a white flag up!â
âSurrender accepted! Â Furl all sail. Â Wait for boarders until we have done with the rest of the Secret Fleet!â
Runners brought welcome news to the Captain and the rest of the catapult crew. Â The lance from the Carsis Rising had hit well above the water line and a few compartment bulkheads had been broken. Â Damage Control already had the hull tight. Â There were three casualties, no fatalities. Â No severe damage.
While the Grandalor had been fighting her engagement, the rest of the Secret Fleet began to raise sail in an effort to get away. Â They saw the ease with which the Crossover and Carsis Rising were dispatched. Â
Ships had been dispatched against the Orca, too. Â One was on fire and the other was signaling, âDistress! Â Taking water!â
Now, the Secret Fleet discovered sails closing in from east and west as well. Â The Grandalor and the Orca were to the south and the now deadly coral of Morganâs Reef, nearly exposed by the Dragon Tide, was a line of treacherous breakers and foam to the north. Â There was no visible escape from the death trap of swirling currents, raging surf and unyielding stone.
Several of the trapped ships raised white flags. Â The Ugine and a few others promptly opened fire on them with their War catapults. Â One of them fired back at the Ugine, holing her hull at the waterline. Â The Ugine tried to flee north, aiming for a narrow safe passage through the reef.
The Ugine was well into the reef passage and looked to be getting away. Â Out of the blue, literally, a number of Sea Hawks dove down and struck at the helmsman and any other exposed personnel with claws and beaks. Â Deprived of control, the Ugine ran hard aground on the rock of the reef. Â With none to keep order, panic developed and people began to abandon ship frantically. Â The untended sails caught the wind and dragged the ship over onto her side. Â Survivors clung to the capsized hulk of the Secret Fleetâs once proud flagship.
Mikhala, watching the attack, felt a stirring in her heart. Â She was unsure how she knew it but the big, dangerous birds had been defending something precious to them. Looking about, she could not see the seaweed mat that would house a rookery.
Seemingly satisfied, the Wide Wings soared away. Â Several of them peeled off from the main flock and flew south to perch in their nests in the topmasts of the Grandalor.
Deprived of their leader, the rest of the Secret Fleet now surrendered. Â The captured ships were set to the tasks of rescue and salvage first. Â Next, they were deprived of sails and held at anchorage while the balance of the Naral fleet was recalled for the first Emergency Gathering in its history.
In the days that followed, in spite of being at the center of the storm, Mikhala was spending every waking moment that she could be spared, down in sickbay. Â Kenner Morgan had been on the Damage Control team in the compartment that was holed by the missile from the Carsis Rising. Â At first the wounds had seemed slight. Â Small fragments of glued Strong Skin had been driven into his arm and chest. Â Severe immune reactions were beginning to develop around the alien proteins.
In the background they could overhear Doctor Corin in the next bunk bay expostulating, âJoram, I know that its only a tiny abcess! Â Itâs not the size thatâs important. Â Itâs where it is. Â Itâs next to the carotid artery in your neck! Â That abscess needs to be drained now! Â It can eat through the artery wall and kill you in minutes or less.â
They heard Joramâs mulish, âI feel fine. Â The thing only itches a little! Â Less than an aero-plankton nibble. Â Iâll be fine by tomorrow. Â Youâll see!â
Mikhala looked down at Kenner and then up to Kurin. Â Fearfully she said, âJoram only has one little boil. Â Kenner has maybe a dozen. Â If they are so worried about Joram, what are my Kennerâs chances?â
Kurin, who often assisted Doctor Corin, was trying to reassure Mikhala. Â âI know that it looks bad. He will likely be on the invalid list for several weeks. Â This problem happens in the boat shops fairly often, though rarely with this many splinters. Â We should pull him through without much trouble.â
Mikhala looked at Kurin and said softly, âFor the love of all Dragons, I hope so. Â Iâm just so afraid to lose him. Â Finding him and this ship are the first good things that ever happened to me. Â Donât let the Dark Dragon take him, please.â
Kenner looked up from his bunk and said weakly, âDonât fret, Love of Mine. Â We stopped the Konning Captain dead in his wake, before he and his minions could do much harm.â
âTheyâve hurt you, My Love. They have done too much already.â
While Kenner and Mikhala were speaking, Kurin turned to Doctor Corin and said softly, âI know that we usually just let the body absorb these fragments, Doctor. Perhaps we should drain these abscesses in his chest and see if we can get the shards out. Â I think that they are probably larger than the usual shop slivers. Â Iâm not comfortable with how weak he is.â
Doctor Corinâs response was to check Kennerâs pulse, respiration, eye tracking and pupil response. He nodded gravely and asked, âKenner, will you let me drain these abscesses? Â We need to probe and remove the bits that are causing them.â
Mikhala drew a breath in fear but said, âPlease, Love, let them try. Â Iâm scared that if you donât, the Orca Whales will sing you to Dark Iren.â
Kenner took her hand and she was frightened by the weakness in his grip. Â He said, âIf I know one thing, I know that they will do their best for me. Â Tell them to do it.â
Kurin had already got out a surgical kit. Â She turned to Mikhala and said kindly, âWe need you to wait outside while we do this. Â We have to have a sterile area. It will take some time to prepare and then the draining and probing will take more time. Â Give us an hour and a half, at least. Â Go to the mess or up on deck to wait. Â We will send for you as soon as we are done. Â Tell the Lady that I have asked that you be excused from any duty until Kenner is well.â
They politely shooed Mikhala out and began preparations. Â As Kurin had predicted, it was a lengthy procedure. Â Things got complicated quickly. Â First, one abscess proved to be larger than it appeared. Â The sliver was narrow and long. Â Removing it was a delicate job because the pus had corroded it into two pieces and the second part was deeply buried.
Another was nearly through the muscle of the chest wall. Â Besides the clean pus of the immune response, there was the stench and green goo of an infection. Â If it had burst to the lung it would surely have been fatal. Â
As each abscess was drained, it needed to be washed clean with precisely diluted Hag venom to anesthetize, wash and sterilize the wound. Â They were working carefully on a simple abscess when Mikka, the Doctorâs other assistant, touched his sleeve.
She whispered, âItâs Joram, Doctor. Â He doesnât feel well and a large bulge has developed under his abscess.â
âDragons eat him!â Doctor Corin swore under his breath. Â More clearly, he asked, âKurin, can you continue with Kenner?â

We will have to wait along with Mikhala for the culture results.
As for the Widewings, they have always had that bond among rookery flocks.  That is what made them so dangerous. Sharp beaks, claws, able to dive from high altitude? Sure, but humans routinely take out deadly creatures. Widewings though, attack in large coordinated strikes. Due to the bond, should one adult die, the others will care for the orphaned chicks.
What has happened with Mikhala and Fishdiver is one of the things that has the Dragons so fascinated by the ecological change in Sea Hawk behavior. Tanlin and Kurin being admitted to rookery flock and the flock now being attached to the Grandalor, opened the way for the birds to accept some humans as flock mates. The Dragons REALLY want to see how this works out.
The trials to come will be a mess. Scattering of a single shipâs crew is almost routine. The crew are spread through the fleet. Scattering of this magnitude can create population issues for some ships. The emptied ships are recrewed by volunteers seeking the opportunities for rapid advancement or just wanting a change. Ships are too valuable a resource to allow to be wasted by sitting idle.
