JAIRA: WHY AM I ON YOUR SNAPCHAT

the past few months had been rocky. terrance needed to work especially hard to forgive her now that he saw her everyday. and it was harder than he thought. but today was different. it was the anniversary of his mother’s death  and every year, on this day, he felt the urge to break his sobriety. he’d been staring at a bottle of brandy, reliving the moment he’d gotten the news. it wasn’t until tessa’s fresh out of the shower aroma wafted under his nose did he break from his thoughts. “tess baby.” he said gently, reaching out to grab her arm and pull her close. snaking his arms around her, he rest his forehead on her belly. “how can an alcoholic be a father?” 

    “you know what? there’s nothing i hate more than someone who can’t appreciate a good film.” hakeem frowned at her, shaking his head in disgust. “i can’t believe you didn’t think that was a cinematic masterpiece. the plot was amazing, the cinematography was well done, the acting was superb. what was it missing? don’t worry, i’ll wait for you to try to come up with something. look me dead in my face and tell me one thing wrong with that movie.”

–––   she knew what they thought about this, it wasn’t the first time they’d brought it up, that kato had brought it up. she didn’t want to talk about it, she never wanted to talk about it. for imani it was a nonissue, it was nothing to think about, nothing to worry about, a move on, grin and bear it kind of thing. standing up for herself, she wasn’t good at it. she’d rather disarm tension with charm, smiles, kindness. she’d tried that with trey’s friend, and he’d thought she was flirting. she hadn’t been, but she shouldn’t have complimented him so much. she’d just meant.... she didn’t know what she’d meant. not that, never that. part of her was terrified trey thought she had been trying to make a pass. “come on, you’re hyping this up, it’s not this typa deal. so what if his man called me a ho, he thought i was actin’ like come. you overreacting. he just misunderstood, it’s my fault, i was too friendly.”

“plans? i wasn’t plannin’ on doing a goddamn thing this year. i haven’t done anything real exciting for my birthday in maybe...six years.” typical of them to continue crossing paths through mutual friends. but this time, kida’s bored with the kickback — obvious, since she’s more entertained playing with her straw more than anything. “what, you gonna hook me up with a shoot for half off or somethin’? that’d be pretty lit actually.” ( @miillennials )
