“  so  ,  how  are  you  hoping  this  night  ends  for  you  ?  ”  she  questioned  ,  head  canting  slightly.  “  i  want  the  night  to  end  on  a  happy  note  for  me.  i  feel  like  shit's  been  way  too  crazy  around  here  lately  ,  and  it'd  be  nice  to  just  ...  have  a  night  of  fun  that  doesn't  end  in  disaster.  don't  you  think  ?  ”

he  was  trying  to  remain  calm  ,  to  not  be  so  on  edge.  he  reminded  himself  that  he  was  fine  ,  that  it  was  a  big  city  and  he  wouldn't  stand  out.  still  ,  the  doubt  lingered  in  the  back  of  his  mind.  going  out  to  an  open  event  like  this  posed  a  risk  ,  he  just  hoped  he  didn't  end  up  regretting  it.  “  well  ,  you  planning  on  bidding  on  anything  tonight  ?  ”

“  this  time  of  year  tends  to  bring  out  the  most  ...  interesting  people,  ”  margot  said,  taking  a  sip  of  her  coffee  before  setting  it  down.  “  i  was  in  a  craft  store  today  and  i  saw  two  grown  women  fighting  over  a  little  ghost  cat,  ”  she  said,  shaking  her  head.  “  i  don't  know  why  they're  so  deadset  on  decorating  for  halloween  this  early,  but  i  guess  that's  none  of  my  business.  i  just  think  they  were  both  too  stupid  to  realize  they  could  easily  just  place  an  online  order  for  the  dog  and  it'd  show  up  in  a  few  days  ...  long  before  halloween  arrives.  ”
