'The Adventurer: The Curse of the Midas Box'
Part of an ongoing review of Michael Sheen's work
Okaaaayyyyyy, so I needed a bit of a break from the heavy motifs of 'Bright Young Things' and 'Wilde,' so I decided to go with something a bit lighter and more fun. Enter 'The Adventurer: The Curse of the Midas Box.' I'd never heard of it, but I figured it might be a nice little trip down what I could tell was young adult action/adventure-type goingson. And I gotta say...
... I was disappointed. It was slow in parts, klunky in others, and with acting that was either way over the top or more deadpan than Keanu Reeves on quaaludes. It had a decent enough if predictable premise, and I was a bit surprised by the ending. Had the execution been better, and yeah, a lot of the acting, even by otherwise wonderful veterans Lena Heady, Sam Neill, and Ioan Gruffudd, then it may have gone from a 5/10 to a 7.
I know, I know, this is starting to sound like all I do is heap praise upon Mr. Michael Sheen, but seriously, his presence was the only reprieve. Unfortunately, they teased us with him; not in the good way, but in the way that makes you want to find the director & screenwriters and give them each a solid whack upside the cranium. Roguishly charming, ruggedly dashing, and quick to wit, Captain Will Charity was the best- perhaps indeed the only good- part of this film. I do love that they let him wear a real earring! I wish they had provided more backstory, more screentime, and MUCH more dialogue for him, even if it was just exposition or as a plot driver meant to send the main character down the path. I would have loved if they'd had him as a mentor or guide, not running the whole op, but providing support to the "hero" on his Hero's Journeyโข. It seemed as though the character had been written that way in the original Mariah Mundi books but his role was reduced for the screen. I could be wrong, though; perhaps Capt. Charity was an even less prominent character, but was given more because they had MICHAEL FUCKING SHEEN for the part. What a shame. He gave it such a good go, and they wasted him.
Ah well. I got to spend a bit of time watching MS being rakishly sexy, so it was worth it. Here's a parting gift for you, if you read this far:
