Pretty decent day for a swim. Decent water temperature, warm enough air temperature. Woke up and got there later than I wanted to cut it to turning around at the 1/4 mile buoy. Garmin tracked 1,118 yards (I had a pretty wide turn around the buoy (there was another swimmer kind of camped out right at the buoy, I didn’t want to crowd him/her in case they were having some open water anxiety), but not THAT wide) and it looks like the tail end of the track picked up some extra yardage. Let’s just call it right about half a mile. Given that I’ll (in most likelihood) still be going to the gym at lunch, I’m OK with a shortened swim.
Speaking of the way back, it seemed like there was a lot of what I’m going to call “microchop”. Not big swells or anything, but every time I tried to sight or breathe I got slapped in the face with a tiny little wave. I wasn’t alone either - someone else who finished a bit before me was complaining about the same thing.
It also seemed like I was being pushed out away from the wall. I generally track pretty closely to the wall on the way back, but I was a bit away from it. I was initially a little further out to give a wide berth to some other swimmers I was passing, but I never seemed to edge back in very close.
