Coming to the end of another great day on the grand tour of Yorkshire. Thankfully no dtiving today and the weather was great for walking. Spent the day at Portland works, built around 1870 with a foundry and cuttlery production. Today the foundry is still in operation and a number of small makers are working there. I visited @michaelmaysheffield, maker of fine pocket knives, to see his workshop and the production of the damascus steel blades. The foundry was incredible, much as it was over 100 years ago, with original machines still working hard. Watching the process of forging damascus steel with 153 layers was hypnotic, and hot, with the foundry at 1200 degrees Celcius. The level of craftsmanship going into the knives was very impressive, with the @hebtroco knife getting the Yorkshire oak and Whitby jet detailing.
