#MovieoftheDay: And Now Miguel (1966) Movies I Want to See: 36/50 My mother had pleasant memories of seeing this film on a date when it was in theaters. Since then, it's been forgotten, even among the output of producer Robert B. Radnitz, who seems never to have met a Newbery-winning novel he didn't like. The few reviews are on the mixed side, some calling it pleasant but uneventful, and others claiming the titular protagonist (Pat Cardi) is fairly tiresome. It's about a boy, the youngest boy in a family of shepherds, who dreams of joining the men as they travel into the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. When his brother is drafted, he gets his chance. First his father made the journey, then his brother..."and now Miguel". In Memory of Michael Ansara: 1922 - 2013
I've been terrified of Michael Ansara since I was about four years old.
As Kang on the original Star Trek episode "Day of the Dove," he was a formidable opponent of Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise, willing to go to any lengths to defeat his enemy and bring glory to the Klingons. On Batman: The Animated Series, he brought a detached, vengeful voice to the character of Mr. Freeze, truly scaring me in a way that a Batman story hadn't before.
Now, I learn that the man has passed away, and I'm saddened but proud to have been fortunate enough to take in his work. Ansara, as I now know, was incredibly nuanced in his performances, and knew the value of great delivery and emotional truth both as a young man, and a seasoned actor. His contributions to two of my favorite franchises in history truly cannot be understated, and I really hope that history remembers the credit he deserves for shaping them.
Thank you, Mr. Ansara. Rest well.
