A very fun b-movie with silly practical effects that wouldn't pass in the lowest budget movies today, but still enjoyable and a little terrifying in the right places

Unfavorable Odds | by Michael Mark
A leaky pot cannot hold the Dharmaās jewels,
my guru scolds. Almost all he has pouredĀ
into me finds the floor, spots the carpet.Ā
I canāt remember the sacred sutrasĀ
or absorb their meanings, I blankĀ
on the chants. Even the Diamond Sutra,Ā
an instant after our lesson, dims.Ā
Patch the pot!Ā Guru stamps his doll-sized feet.Ā
Concentration!Ā he growls in my earĀ
so close itās a kiss, and forces cup after cupĀ
of tea into me so I may continue.Ā
The chances of a blind tortoiseĀ
swimming the vast oceans, he says,Ā
and surfacing its headā
my head, he meansĀ
āthrough a life preserver are moreĀ
favorable than the odds of findingĀ
enlightenment. And thatās a good pot!
Gurus get angry. Itās called wrath.Ā
Purposeful rage. Patience in disguise.Ā
I get it. My progress is hisĀ
after all. His illuminationĀ
hinges on mine. So I meditateĀ
on the pot, as he instructs,Ā
visualizing the leaks stopped.Ā Tell me what
you see.Ā The pot, I say, dented, scouredĀ
past its shine.Ā Good! Worn from use.Ā
Shiny is lazy. Where is the pot?Ā
On a windowsill. Her hands bring it toĀ
the sinkās spout.Ā She has arrived! Auspicious!Ā
But the pot is leaking.Ā No-no! The potĀ
is solid. The pot is complete, whole.Ā
Water is running out.Ā How canĀ
she boil tea, meat?Ā She wants to feedĀ
the plants.Ā Generous heart.Ā But when she getsĀ
to her garden, the pot is near dry.Ā
Garden? She has a nice place!Ā There areĀ
puddles around her feet.Ā She dancesĀ
in the puddles!Ā No, she apologizes toĀ
the shrubs, trees, flowers.Ā Ah,Ā
compassion. Bodhicitta.Ā Drop byĀ
drop, back and forth,Ā
she tends to each.Ā Joyful effort!Ā
I open my eyes.Ā
My guru is drenched.Ā
We are getting there, he says.
