Transport for London (TfL) has had to pull part of its latest video campaign against harassment of female passengers because, in the offending clip, the man who was shown pestering a woman happened to be black (while the woman happened to be white). And, after receiving a single complaint from the public, the Advertising Standards Authority ruled that the clip āhad the effect of perpetuating a negative racial stereotypeĀ about black men as perpetrators of threatening behaviourā.
Frankly, Iām amazed. Not that the clip has been banned, but that it got made in the first place. Normally, after all, the villains in such campaigns are just about always portrayed as white. Take, for example, the video from TfLās own āReport It to Stop Itā campaign of 2016, which showed a non-white woman being harassed on the Tube by a white man in a suit.
Itās the same in other countries. In Australia, a 2024 poster campaign against āstreet harassmentā depicted white men pestering non-white women. AndĀ in Germany last year, remarkably, a poster campaign against sexual harassment in swimming pools depicted a white woman ā yes, woman ā grabbing the bottom of a horrified looking non-white man, alongside the slogan, āStop! No groping!ā
[ TfLās advert showing a black man harassing a white woman has been banned after the regulator ruled it reinforced negative racial stereotypesĀ ]
What do we think would explain this striking trend? Personally, I somehow doubt the people behind such campaigns seriously believe that 100 per cent of sexual harassment is perpetrated by white men ā or, indeed, by white, German women. I suspect they merely make it look as if it is because otherwise, they risk being accused of āperpetuating a negative racial stereotypeā. And that could get them into terrible trouble.
A similar phenomenon may be observed in films and TV dramas. In 2018, diversity campaigners launched something called āThe Riz Testā (named after the British Muslim actor,Ā Riz Ahmed). It dictates that if any fictional Muslim character is depicted as āthe perpetrator of terrorismā (or as āirrationally angryā, āmisogynisticā, āculturally backwardsā or āa threat to a Western way of lifeā), then āthe film/TV show fails the testā.
The film and TV industries have clearly taken these strictures to heart. Because nowadays, as you may have noticed, fictional terrorists ā and fictional villains in general ā almost always seem to be played by white men.
Again, I think we can all see why this happens. No one wants to be accused of āperpetuating a negative racial stereotypeā. So itās best to play safe, and make sure that the bad guys are white. But doesnāt this risk āperpetuating a negative racial stereotypeāĀ about white men?
But then, maybe that doesnāt matter.

If you've watched any TV or movies in the last 10 years, you know exactly who everybody is going to be based on their race and their sex.
A white man is going to be one of three things: the villain; an ignorant fool who needs to be humilitated and schooled in order bolster an interesectionally more endowed DEI hire; or a disposable redshirt.
Sometimes, several of these at the same time. Such as the array of extremely accommodating white male stuntmen working their butts off to try and cast the illusion that 59 year old, 5 ft 5 inch Viola Davis can beat up a 35 year old bad guy with 8 inches of height and 80lb on her.
If you want to see all three at the same time, just watch Star Trek: Learing Academy. But it's hardly the only one. Basically every major franchise has descended into this. Marvel, DC, Star Wars, Doctor Who, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, TRON, Alien, Predator, The Witcher, Game of Thrones, every Disney "live-action" remake, and even Stranger Things.

We all know Deaky loved those colorful aloha shirts with amazing patterns throughout the whole 80s, and while he had plenty, probably one of the most famous ones is the pink Live Aid shirt! He admitted to be proud of being a musician during Live Aid, and since we knew Queen brought all their families to the event, I wanted to imagine the moment when the Deacons reunited after the show, each of them eager to hug John and his colorful (and sweaty) shirt š„°.
Had fun using just the colors of John's outfit, I hope you'll like it as well ššš
This one is dedicated to all my little students who are always thinking in magical stories. I'm a teacher, by the way.
Summary: Freddie helps Michael Deacon with his preschool homework.
They are in London again with another record to realize and challenges to rise. Freddie is ready for his new album and cannot wait for all the things he would be doing with the band. But today will be different, if he can say it like that.
āFred, this is a lot of responsibility. Are you convinced? I donāt wanna come back here because you called me crying and stressed.ā John said, hiding a little smile.
He knows the consequences of these experiments, Freddie is good for a million things, he could sing a high note without disheveling, but caring for a little child and helping him with his homework is another thing.
āOh, shut up, Deaky! Iām an expert on this. Just look at me! Do you believe all that shit about my shameful behavior?ā Freddie replied, taking a sip of his wine. āIām an angelic soul, the kids love me.ā
John rolled his eyes, knowing the result of this discussion. āOkay, you got it. Iāll be back in three hours. Please, donāt bring him any sweets if he doesnāt finish his homework.ā He warns him with his finger, showing Michael's notebook. āAh yes⦠donāt make jokes about sexual topics when he is with you, Michael is a talking parrot in his classroom.ā
Freddie smiled mischievously. āLike uncle, like nephew.ā He laughed loudly, forgetting all Johnās signals. āOkay, Iāll be a good uncle, Itās a promise.ā
āThank you, thatās all I want to hear of you.ā
Five minutes later, Michael came into the living room, looking forward to a great moment with his uncle Freddie. The child was excited, he always wanted to share with the singer out of all those recording sessions and backstage. This afternoon they'll be a powerful couple⦠or maybe not.
When they were finally alone, Michael started to play with the cats, following them through the whole room and screaming like a devil. Freddie was scared, he never saw himself as a nanny, but this job couldnāt be so difficult, there exist limits and heās going to apply them now.
āLet's see⦠Your daddy told me about your homework. Itās time to do it, little monkey.ā He caught the boy and carried him by the hand to the kitchen table.
āPlease, uncle Freddie. I wanna play out with your cats.ā Michael cried.
āBelieve me, boy. This is not the cutest and funniest thing in the world, but you need to finish your homework if you want to play and kill all my babies. Did you grab it?ā
Michael looks at him, embarrassed. āOkay.ā
āWell, here are the instructions.ā Freddie read the topic. āYou got to draw four forest animals and tell a story about them tomorrow in class.ā He smiled with satisfaction, it's an easy job.
"Do you know how to draw all of this? Really?"
"Of course, I'm an expert in drawing, I graduated in design."
"Wow, that's awesome!" Michael said, clapping with pride.
"Okay boy, let's do this." Freddie took the pencil and sheet of paper, while Michael sat close to him. "In the forest we can find different animals like rabbits, owls, wolves⦠What do you want in your story?"
"A lion!"
"Oh no! The lions don't live in the forest. Pay attention to me." Freddie snorted.
The child nodded, he couldn't deny his happiness.
Freddie had a good idea. "Listen, I know a beautiful story with all those animals." He clarified his voice. "Once upon a time, in the middle of the deep forest, lived four animals with stronger powers: an intelligent owl that could say all about the universe, but be careful, you need to say the magical words to shut him up⦠like your uncle Bri."
"Really? That's funny!" Michael couldn't stop laughing, and Freddie couldn't blame him. "What are the others?"
"The old owl is a big friend of a meddlesome raccoon, who is always doing strange things in the middle of the night. He is waiting for something, no matter what, he'll always be there to break your patience."
"And who is the raccoon, uncle Freddie?"
Fred smiled mischievously. "Uncle Roger⦠of course."
Michael held his abdomen because of laughter. "It's my daddy's turn!" He screamed.
"Sure! He's a⦠fox."
"Is he a powerful fox?"
"Don't expect a lot of information because he's an intelligent and mysterious fox, who is hiding into the night looking forā¦
"Food?" Michael asked..
"Oh no⦠something more⦠just foxes things." He said, embarrassed. "But he's one of the most brilliant animals that you can meet as well."
"Yes! Daddy is a superpower fox!"
Freddie pinched his cheek fondly, he cannot deny the love that he feels for this child.
"I wanna know who are you, uncle Freddie! Please."
The singer sat on the edge of the chair, looking like a peacock. "Okay, boy⦠your magnificent uncle is a gorgeous, elegant and stunning deer." He responded, feeling like a big star of Broadway.
"Wow! Like Bambi!"
"What? No, a much better deer, I have magic."
"In yours horns?"
Freddie raised an eyebrow. "Of course! And the other animals have respect for me, but we're good friends."
"Oh, I can understand it, for that reason the band is called Queen. All of those animals are the forest rulers." The child reasoned and then smiled, feeling satisfied with his intervention.
"Great! You're so smart, little monkey."
"I would like to read this story in my class! Thank you." The child gave his uncle a big hug.
"It's a pleasure, honey."
The next day, Michael got an "A" for his peculiar story, but Roger wasn't satisfied with his character.
"Why the hell am I a fucking raccoon?" He claimed.
His bandmates could hide their laughs, and Freddie pinched his cheek, enjoying the scene.
"It's not personal, dear. It's just a preschool story."

There was always a rule in my parentsā house:Ā āIām boredā! was never aloud.Ā āFind something to do,ā they always said.
Well. I never get bored. I always find a way to entertain myself....
I screencapped the Scottish stage/voice actor, Michael Deacon (he did Grimaās voice in the John Bakshi LOTR cartoon,)from theĀ ā70ā²s crime program, Callan.
Here he plays the unhinged, gleeful henchman named Sunshine.
Well, I had this idea for a while and the event hosted by @deakysgurl it's the perfect opportunity to post it. It's family fluff, 1990 John with his family having a good time outside home ;) (yep, the title of this one shot is a little reference to YMBF).
You also can find this fic in AO3 here.
Word count: 1330.

He needed some distraction. He needed to smile, to be happy once again⦠At least, for a moment.
It was 1990, the recording of Innuendo was there, but he wasnāt with enough mental energy to do it. The fact to see Freddie ill just break his heart. He thought how in just 5 years his friend passed to be completely sane, touring and having the best life to be extremely thin and weak. He barely handled to record some songs.
John was at home, smoking in his garden and trying to clean his thoughts. The day was nice, cool weather, neither too hot nor too cold. The right weather to be outside and enjoy nature. Watching some trees, an idea came to his mind.
He entered to the house. His children were in the living room, having fun while theyāre watching some TV. He appears suddenly there, with the widest smile that he could make.
-Do you want some bike time in family? -John asked loudly.
They were happy. Laura and Joshua ran to hug him. Robert and Michael just raised their right arms and yelled from the sofa where they were sitting.
-I think thatās a āyesā -he replied, watching to his kids hugging him.
-YES!!! -the kids replied.
-Well, I need to tell this to your mother -he said, trying to walk to be free of their embrace.
-It was your whole idea? -Michael asks.
-Yes. The dayās weather itās nice, so I was thinking about some bike riding in a huge park.
The children were excited about this sudden idea of their father.
They left the embrace to accompany their father, to tell their plans to their mother.
Ronnie was crocheting near to the scene, so she listened to her spouseās words.
-Ronnie, well, I think you listened⦠What do you think? -John asked.
She left her crochet in her lap and watched to her husbandās eyes. She sighed and watched her childrenās eyes. Ronnie watched her husbandās eyes again.
-Why not? -she replied, smiling.
Everyone was happy.
The time to prepare for this sudden family activity was short, so both adults were organizing everything as fast as they could and their kids were helping them.
30 minutes later, they were leaving the house. The day was nice and perfect to ride a bike, without any doubts. Both in their respective cars, with half of their kids in each car, and bringing with them some snacks, some repellent, sunscreen and of course, the bikes. Ronnie brought the camera with her, to take some pics of this day. Both cars were going together, one behind the other.
They reached a nice and huge park with lots of trees and a road to ride bikes or walk. Both adults left the cars parked near to the park and everyone brought the bikes and the another necessary things to enjoy this afternoon.
After some minutes of walking, Ronnie found a quiet spot of the park with some trees that was near to that road. She armed the picnic. Before riding their bikes, everyone was obligated to put on some repellent and sunscreen to be safer outside, Ronnie helped to her youngest ones.
When they were already with the sunscreen and the repellent, John had an idea.
-Well, I have an idea. We can do a bike race. Who wins, decides tonight's supper. Ready?
-YEAH!!!! -his children exclaimed.
All of them, except Ronnie, were riding their bike and they started to form a straight line
The woman took them a pic riding their bikes in a straight line.
-Ready, set, GO!!! -she exclaimed.
John wasnāt going at his fullest, he left some of his kids can be āthe firstā, even he cheered to his youngest to ride faster.
When they were near to Ronnie, they accelerated even more to be the winner. The winner was Robert. He already was 15 years old, so he had more energy than his younger siblings. Ronnie captivated that moment with the camera.
-YEEEEEESSSSS I won bitches! -Robert exclaimed, excited, raising both arms.
-ROBERT! -Ronnie exclaimed
The teen left to ride his bike to carry it from the handlebar. Meanwhile, his siblings and his dad were following him.
-Shut up, mum, Iām not a kid anymore.
John was laughing because of this situation.
-Ronnie, relax -John said, carrying his bike from the handlebar.
-Well, can I decide the supper, no? -Robert asked
-Yes- John said- Which itās your plan?
-Some McDonald's and go to the video game arcade to play!!
His younger siblings are extra happy and John was smiling widely.
-Your wish is our command, Rob -John said. After this afternoon having some time outside we will go to a McDonald's and to the video arcade! Now, letās share some snacks!
The kids left the bikes on the grass, they were near to each other. They sat on the grass near to Veronica and grabbed a glass of orange juice that their mother gave to them, and they drank it quickly. John reached to the picnic site to grab a can of beer that he sneaked.
-Mum, why dad isnāt drinking juice like us? -Laura asked
-Because heās an adult and can drink another thing if he wants.
-Can I grab a can for me, mum? -Robert asked
-Youāre just 15 years old Robert, no.
-Drink a bit of mine Rob -John said, approaching Robert and extending his can of beer to his son.
Ronnie was watching to Johnās eyes, a bit upset.
-Ron, he wants to taste the beer, itās normal -John said.
Robert drank a bit of the beer and his face showed his discomfort.
-Yuck -Robert said- I donāt know why this is cool between my friends -the teen added, returning the can to his father.
-You will love it when youāre older- John added, grabbing the can, winking an eye and smiling. After those words he sat near to Robert and watched to his children- Recharge your batteries kids, we will have another bike race soon.
-Which one will be the prize? -Michael asks.
-Who wins will decide the dessert! -John turned left to see Robertās face- Not you Rob, you stay with your mother -John whispered to his son.
Robert wasnāt pleased with that at first, but after he thought that he could eat extra snacks meanwhile his siblings were in their bikes, then he smiled.
Some minutes later, the other kids and John stood up and were ready for another race.
Veronica took another pic of her kids and her husband.
-Why Rob isnāt with us, Papa? -Joshua asked
-He decided to rest -John replied to his youngest son and after winking an eye to Robert. Robert replied with a smile.
Another race started. This time Laura won.
-YEEEEEEEEEEEEH BITCHES- she screamed happily, imitating to her elder brother.
Robert and John smiled a lot for this. Veronica was a bit worried.
-Our dessert today will be ICE CREAM!!!!! -Laura screamed, happy.
-Okie sweetie -John replied to his daughter.
All of them were in their picnic area again, leaving the bikes in a pile. John was monitoring them, from time to time, meanwhile they were eating some snacks and drinking orange juice.
After an afternoon in the park, enjoying more bike riding and the sunset, the family started to go to the cars to leave there the bikes, because it had a Mc Donalds near to the park. Meanwhile, John was like āWhere did I park my car?ā for a moment, until he remembered about its placement. They left the bikes tied on the rooftop of each car and walked to the Mc Donalds to eat their supper. An hour later, they ate Sundaes, and after they were to an arcade. Robert won a big price, choosing a big broccoli stuffed toy. Robert and his siblings were joking about the similarity of the stuffed toy with their dadās hair.
The family had a beautiful Sunday. John could clean his mind for half a day. He, with his family, were happy and smiley outside home.
