Overhaul is a character defined by his role as a yakuza member. He joined the Shie Hassaikai at a young age, after being found as an orphan by their leader. Up until recently, this fact didn't seem to mean much for the story. But recent theory has suggested that he could've been among the group of 'seed children' All for One and Garaki specifically harbored, possibly in the same hospital Touya wakes up in after being kidnapped by AFO.
While there is still no confirmation as of current, I do think there is plausible evidence of this being true. I haven't seen this be brought up yet, forgive me if this is old news that I'm unaware of...
Overhaul's character is one I've already poured over, his backstory has always stood out to me, which is what made me think back to this panel from chapter 158. Here, Kai is depicted in a room by himself, while other kids are playing outside. I think it's worth noting that what he's wearing, although largely obscured by shadow, does not seem to resemble any type of school uniform. We know Kai did attend regular school while with the Shie Hassaikai, however.
In the panel, a few things can also be seen. There are airplanes decorating the wall, as well as a butterfly. The speech bubble covers up something else, but it can be presumed it's another wall decoration. There are dotted and zig-zag patterned boxes that can be seen as well. Additionally, you'll notice there's a paneling that goes partially up the wall, and a checker print pattern on the floor.
The more I sat on this panel, the more one of the kids in the background stood out to me. I began to wonder, if there were any similarities between them and any of the ones depicted in chapter 350, after Touya wakes up.
This girl, on the right. It's somewhat of a match to the kid shown above, but not really any hard proof.
However, CH 350 offers more looks into the hospital Touya woke up in, right before these two kids are shown.
Looking at that, we see a lot of the same things as we do in Overhaul's flashback. The planes, the butterflies, even the same patterned boxes. A type of paneling goes partially up the wall, you'll even notice both have checkered floors. It also shows properly the tree on the wall, which must be the additional decoration previously blocked by the text.
The two rooms are not exactly the same, I'll admit that. It's possible most children's hospital in Japan look like this, or he happened to be in one of the random orphanages Garaki did own. However, I believe it could also be an intentional choice from Horikoshi
After all, what state is Overhaul in when he's found by his adopted father? He has no parents, no place to go. He appears dirty, as if he's been wandering around outside for a while.
It would make sense if this where the case, as Touya immediately burns down the facility in favor of returning home. What did happen to those kids? Is it possible one of them was Kai? I really think so
I don't have any hard proof. But the visual evidence is there. There is that, and one last thing too
Chapter 350 begins with Garaki lamenting over the children him and AFO worked for find. 'Wicked seeds, worthy of becoming vessels'
There is a character we know who grows up to be capable of great evil. Who doesn't care about the sacrifices if it means reaching his goal, and who can literally fuse his body at will with any one or thing...
Seems vessel worthy to me. I don't know. It's some food for thought...
