Exactly 100 years ago…on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month the guns fell silent…..it has been told that the silence was deafening…..This was the signing of the armistice between the warring parties that ended the hostilities of The Great War and eventually paved the way for the official day of observance of November 11th every year of American Veterans day giving thanks to those veterans who have and are serving in our armed forces. I want to give you a short back story to what led up to that 11th day in November 1918. To do that we need to go back a couple of months to Sept 26th 1918. This was the start of what is called the Meuse-Argonne Offensive which was the first large scale battle in WW1 involving the American Doughboys. This was also the largest battle in United States history involving some 1.2 million servicemen. It was also called the hundred days offensive and was the final push of the allies to bring about the end of the war. It was the largest and deadliest battle in US history with American losses of over 26,000 lives in just a span of 47 days. This battle ended with the Armistice on November 11th.
