Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āthatās a rather nasty wound. yes. i noticed. did you notice youāve trailed blood into the tube?ā he speaks lowly as the subway slows to a halt and the doors slide open. people rush out, stepping around them, disappearing from view, clearing the way aboard.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āyou could use a doctor,ā he says softly, not looking directly at the other man, his lips barely move with his words, meant to be unseen. he knew the looks of a man who didnāt want to go to the hospital, and generally, that meant that said person was not so differently aligned than himself.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā still. hackles raised easily, paranoia made men do stupid things. even when injured in public. best not to press to hard, or else heād end up with more blood on his hands than intended.

Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā he isnāt exactly PLEASED with the current predicament, as evidenced by the tight-lipped frown he wears as he looks sidelong over his shoulder at the other man. Ā he doesnāt like feeling trapped Ā -- Ā especially in the literal sense Ā -- Ā though even as his mind flies through the details of his training to attempt to find a solution to their problem, he still has time to feel ANNOYED.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā ā Ā is YOURĀ fault. Ā Ā ā Ā he hisses through closed teeth. Ā Ā ā Ā if I had been alone for this mission Ā -- Ā Ā ā
It takes more effort than Calās put into damn near anythingĀ to put on the persona of Gordon Flynn, Templar, enemy of the Assassins, vicious in a cold way that contradicts his usual fiery anger. The whole thing is made harder still because, whether he knows it or not, Mats reacts to him differently. Works for the ruse, of course, but he canāt wait for the blonde to grow out, for his cheekbones to not look quite so gaunt. His reflection is a stranger that he canāt wait to be rid of. He hates the uneasiness that follows in the wake of Gordon, especially from Mats.
Later, though. They have a lot to get done here, and Gordon Flynn wonāt sleep until itās finished.
Cold blue gaze peers down at Mats through the glass; a practiced look, because itās difficult not to look fondly at him, even at their worst. Even when they fight. But heās got it down now, and Gordonās lips barely twitch into a smile as he lets out a laugh - almost polite, mostly pandering. He chooses to ignore the question asked of him. āCorbeau Matthias Thierry,ā he says, letting slip the Irish accent his father had that Cal never really picked up on but can emulate at the drop of a hat.
His full name doesnāt roll well off Calās tongue. Not for lack of grace, but because he canāt remember everĀ using his full name. Not even Matthias. It feels strange, feels foreign - feels like it emphasizes Gordonās reach in Calās mind. He clasps his hands behind him, stands with his feet shoulder width apart. āI hear you prefer Mats, though. May I call you Mats?ā
Ā Ā āāā Ā it is. Ā it Ā definitely Ā is. Ā beau isnāt enough of a Ā remorseful Ā sort to actually feel bad about it Ā ;; Ā heād figured mats for Ā unconscious Ā && Ā to the awake went the spoils. Ā not that heās not willing to Ā share. Ā he even goes so far as to lower the remaining pizza slice to Ā EYE LEVEL Ā for the assassin lounging in his lap.

āgood morning, mathias.ā a small smile is offered in his direction, a cup of coffee placed delicately before him. sheās CERTAIN her presence is at best, an annoyance at and worst, outright INFURIATING, but sophia has long ago learned to stop evaluating success by whether or not she is LIKED.Ā
it would be a welcome ADDITION, perhaps, but in no way does she expect it.
āi figured this might be a good way to start off the morning. let me know if you need SUGAR.ā a small nod and they both KNOW why sheās here.Ā āhow are you feeling today?ā
Even if Cal hadnāt been tipped off, he feels like he wouldāve figured it out anyway. Mats is talking tooĀ much, even for him, and itās almost too easy to know that thereās more wrong here than heās letting on. Sometimes he finds it strange, the things they do tell each other, and the things they choose to hide, and how they find it all out in the end anyway, so why bother? But they still bother, still hide things, still try to act casual even when itās borderline too cheerful, too normal, too off-putting.
āAlready talked to Moussa,ā he says, his voice hard, no softness to round out the edges.Ā āAnd Lin. And now Iām talking to you.ā He knows thereās more here than what Mats is letting on, and heās trying not to be upset over it, but for thisĀ to be something Mats doesnāt tell him about? Of all things? It makes Calās skin burn and his heart pound, and he has to cross his arms to keep his hands from visibly shaking in anger.Ā
āWould loveĀ to hear more about this clusterfuck at the warehouse, though.ā He raises his eyebrows, waiting for Mats to explain, to tell him what happened. To try and bypass the fact that heās hurt and that Cal can see the bandages peeking from the edges of the hoodie and his shirt. He wants to try to play it casual, but his jaw is tense and heās staring too intently at Mats. Waiting for him to lie. Mats has always been good at lying, Cal just never thought itād be to him.
He knows everything is different when he gets inside. It feels wrong, like a sort of solemnity has fallen over the place, and if he hadnāt been panicking before, he is now. No one looks at him as he moves through the halls, eyes averted, no one wanting to tell him what the fuck is going on, and it makes him almost as angry as he is nervous. Answers, he just wants answers, and no one will even look at him to give him any idea at all, and itās infuriating and makes him panic and-
He gets at least one answer when he bursts into the set of rooms used as a makeshift doctorās office. Stevie lies on one of the beds, an IV in her hand, breathing mask covering her nose and mouth, bandages wrapped around her and it takes no expert to know sheās bruised and battered, and the cast around her arm means at least one broken bone. Sheās on a machine to assist with breathing, and even the rise and fall of her bandaged chest seems staggered. Sheās hurt. Sheās unconscious and barely breathing and broken and hurt and Cal canāt decide if he wants to break down and cry, or if he wants to kill everyone who did this to her.
Both seems like a good middle ground.
He goes to her side and listens just long enough for them to say that sheās in a coma but stable, before heās looking around the room. Itās the last place Mats would ever want to be, but if they got Stevie this bad, he can only imagine how bad Mats got it. Stevie tries and she trains, but she isnāt the fighter so many of the others are, and Mats would die to protect her, and the clench wonāt leave Calās stomach because heās afraid thatās exactly what heās going to hear.
His hand is in her hair, as if he can soothe her out of her pain while heās waiting to hear the news, to find out Mats is dead and no one knows when Stevie will wake up, and he can feel everything crumbling around him already. Desperately he holds everything together, keeps himself from clenching his hand tightly by continuing to run it through Stevieās hair, and oh god, if she doesnāt wake up, if Mats is gone, if Cal is alone again - his breathing becomes ragged, and heās already trying to figure out who to swear vengeance on first-
When Ramona tells him Mats left. No one could stop him from leaving. He brought Stevie back, made sure she was alive, then grabbed some supplies and ran as best his own beaten body would take him. And thatās the breath of relief Cal needs. Mats is alive. But Mats doesnāt work the way most people do, an;d Cal has ideas on how to find him. He wants to stay with Stevie, but he knows she isnāt going anywhere, while Mats could very well be just out of his mind enough to be planning a suicide mission. If he doesnāt bleed out first.
Gently, he leans in to press a kiss to Stevieās forehead and promise her heāll be back before heās grabbed a few more supplies and left.
Mats is only easy to track down because Calās long since learned how his mind works. He spends three and a half hours looking before heās pinned down where heās taken refuge. An abandoned little shack, not quite a house but not quite a garage, with only two rooms, and he finds Mats slumped to the floor of the makeshift bedroom/office/potential workout room, if there was any room for the treadmill shoved in the corner and covered with boxes of junk to actually work. He doesnāt care if it does. He rushes to Matsās side and drops to his knees and he knows Mats has snapped. he just needs to bring him back.
With a firmness he knows he can take with Mats, he holds his face between his hands, forces him to look at him.Ā āMats,ā he says, trying to ground him in reality.Ā āMats, Iām here. Iām here. I got you.ā
