Last night I had the privilege to watch the MetLiveInHD broadcast of Wagner's opera "Parsifal" (from the comfort of Cineworld on Renfrew St in Glasgow!) and I am still reeling from Francois Girard's production. Act II, when Parsifal goes to Klingsor's evil kingdom, was absolutely frightening. The entire stage was a pool of blood, and Klingsor's sinewy, balletic flower maidens were wearing white dresses, which surely were not white by the end of the act. It reminded me a lot of Pina Bausch's work that includes water on the stage, but of course here, it's not water, it's blood. I found myself with mouth agape the entire act. It was gripping, terrifying, and reaffirming that this is why theatre is important.Â
Also, Jonas Kaufman was incredible--a powerful, moving tenor with the ability to have the subtlest, gentlest pianissimos.
If you don't have the time or patience to go see the entire 6-hour production, you can cheat a little by watching this video clip of the end of Act II. I highly recommend going, though. This is one that will be talked about for years.
