What Good Slab Prep Looks Like Before the Pour

Most concrete that fails early does not fail because of the concrete. It fails because of what was underneath it. Prep is the part homeowners never see and the part that decides how long the slab lasts.

Here is what to look for before the truck arrives.

The Base Is Compacted, Not Just Levelled

Loose fill looks flat and behaves nothing like a compacted base. A properly prepared subbase is graded to depth, then mechanically compacted in layers rather than dumped and raked smooth.

Soft spots that were never compacted become the low points where a slab cracks first. If the base still gives underfoot, it is not ready.

Depth Matches the Spec

The excavation should account for both the slab thickness and the base beneath it. A 4-inch slab over 4 inches of compacted base needs roughly 8 inches of excavation, not 4.

Worth asking what depth was dug and what the base depth is, because trimming the base is an easy place for a bid to quietly get cheaper.

Reinforcement Is Lifted Into the Slab

Wire mesh or rebar lying on the ground does almost nothing. Reinforcement works when it sits within the slab, held up on chairs or pulled up as the pour goes in.

This is one of the few things you can check by eye before the pour. If the mesh is flat on the gravel and nobody is lifting it, it will stay at the bottom.

Forms Are Braced and Set to Grade

Forms should be staked at close intervals and braced, with the grade set to move water away from structures. Concrete is heavy and wet forms bow outward under it. A bowed form means an uneven edge and a thinner slab than specified at that point.

Vapour Barrier Where It Belongs

Under interior slabs, a vapour barrier goes between the base and the concrete. For exterior flatwork it is usually not used, because trapped water under an outdoor slab causes more problems than it solves. If someone proposes plastic under an exterior driveway, ask why.

Drainage Is Decided Now

Once the slab cures, the grade is permanent. Where water goes after rain is settled at prep, not afterwards. Slope away from the house, and keep downspout discharge off new flatwork.

What to Ask For

A written scope should state base depth and material, compaction method, slab thickness, reinforcement type and how it will be supported. Those four lines make otherwise identical bids comparable.
