Ok, I have to confess I've never been a big Chrollo fan 'cause I didn't appreciate how he seemed a "villain without a real purpose": the Spider's way of doing things, till now, appeared to me as pointless with just stealing/killing for the sake of it.

But this chapter woowww Now.

Spirit Caravan: Dreamwheel EP (1999)

Choosing my favorite band led by Scott ‘Wino’ Weinrich is like choosing amongst my children; but when quizzed on the issue, I more often than not pick Spirit Caravan.

Formed in 1997, as Shine, following Wino’s second stint fronting The Obsessed (a band that, in turn, bookended his time in Saint Vitus), Spirit Caravan was a completed by bassist/vocalist Dave Sherman and drummer Gary Isom – both of them underground doom/stoner demi-gods, in their own right.

And, while this inspired three-way partnership would (until some recent on-stage reunions with a different drummer) only subsist for five-odd years and two full-lengths, Wino, Sherman and Isom made every note count, as evidenced by this memorable six-track EP.

In fact, you could say that 1999’s Dreamwheel delivered an ideal distillation of Spirit Caravan’s psychedelic doom, well represented by the title track’s deliberate riff hypnosis, fuzz-laden guitar tone and, yes, spiritual lyrics (all amounting to a modern-day resurrection of Sir Lord Baltimore’s “Kingdom Come”).

The similarly appointed (anointed?) “Burnin’ In” and “Sun Stoned” are even more to my liking, topped with searing Wino solos that are just to die for; there’s a foreboding majesty to “C, Yourself,” and “Re-Alignment/Higher Power” marries an atmospheric buzzsaw with a hardcore taster.

All told, Dreamwheel is comprised of merely twenty, transcendent minutes of timeless doom: as relevant today, in 2018, as it was when released, in 1999, and would have been in 1970 -- and kudos to People Like You Records (and Meteor City) for supporting Spirit Caravan.
