disclaimer that my personal experience of Classics as a field is limited to one (1) bachelor's degree, which is to say, in the scheme of things not very much and i'm perfectly aware of that—

but something i was increasingly alive to, as i got to the end of said degree, was a real siloing of the field as it was presented to me, both in terms of separation from eg the study of literature from other eras and milieux, and in terms of separation from analogous modern situations—

like, i took one class that's stayed with me on so-called romanization, and on complicating the idea of that process as a one-way, top-down enactment, when in fact of course there was also resistance, and ways in which the assimilated gave a little of their own color back to the hegemonic culture in their turn, and and and… and i remember thinking, there's at least one extremely obvious comparison to be made here, that literally no one around me is making: namely americanization in the modern day! you want to talk about a dominant imperial culture, that absorbs people of other cultures and is changed by them in its turn—you've got an excellent, familiar illustration of that dynamic right at hand! but no, we were only ever to examine the thing as a distant phenomenon in its own particular context; never mind that understanding it to be a process played out more broadly, to which each of us had our own native relationship, might have proved usefully illuminating…

and similarly when i see people passing around posts that are like, ‘this roman poet is in control of the image he presents, even when the image he presents is of him not being in control,’ i think to myself, well, yes, i agree with this analysis entirely—because that’s how literally all writing works?? in fact you and i both do this ourselves, every day, with our perblogging right here on tumblr dot not-edu???

#you as a writer are a camera! the ways in which you frame and filter an image give you power over it‚ even if the image is of you‚ abject #this is wholly true of roman poetry but also equally true of poetry throughout the ages and in fact of All Writing‚ Ever #so it strikes me as quite weird to be discussing it as if it were a singular insight about a particular poet #idk. it's not that it's never useful to examine some particular manifestation of some particular thing #but it's like when a gay guy i used to follow was going on abt the unique difficulty he faced in attempting to date while unbeautiful #and it was like. well. i think perhaps. anyway i remain deeply fascinated by the ‘ageless blogs dni’ crowd. hello: the only people on the internet that you can know for sure aren’t lying to you abt their age are the ones who haven’t disclosed it!

#like‚ would i be taken aback to find that my thin-sliced demographic assumptions abt one of you were wrong? sure‚ maybe‚ briefly #but like. in what world would that scupper a previously congenial string of platonic interactions #anyway i think these people forget abt internet personas #like at one pt i realized a bnf on here was identifiable by virtue of all the breadcrumbs they’d mentioned over decades of blogging #and it was like. well. either you’re closeted abt yr transness in different directions on- and offline #or you’re just straight up blogging as a different gender for stronger pseudonymity #and like. either way is fine and valid! but like. People Do In Fact Dissemble About Basic Demographic Info Online #i would say ‘if that bothers you you gotta keep yr socializing offline’ but. actually you can't always tell irl either.#like one time i read an article abt a fully adult woman who’d‚ like‚ secretly reembedded herself in high school #obviously an extreme example but also my bff used to get asked as a high schooler if she was somebody's mom #and i got asked as a late-twentysomething whether i was a high schooler #so like. idk. something i think a lot about is, like, blogging opacity—like, if you draw a veil over the details of something, because, say, you're trying to zoom past it to look at the Broader Pattern you think it represents, or to preserve someone's privacy (an SO's or a friend's or even your own), is your post still… actually coherent? are you communicating anything, or have you scooped out any understandable sense of the thing along with the specifics of it? and honestly i think a lot of us, very much including me, are very bad at determining that!

#and like. obviously you're never *obligated* to Communicate. you get to put whatever you want on your own blog.#& sometimes it IS really just about Getting Something Out‚ i think‚ & abt putting it in public so you don't feel you're NOT free to voice i #but for my part i do generally want to make at least *some* kind of sense to people #so i wish there were a better rubric for like #how much can i streamline this post/focus on the parts of an experience that are mine to talk about #because i think it's really NOT actually intuitive how much work context is doing‚ from a vantage point inside that context #and i feel like‚ yeah‚ we all get to do what we want with our blogs: but i *would* like to at least *know* what i'm doing‚ you know?#metatumbling
