Pulp never asked for permission. It was loud, shameless and gloriously excessive. Every cover promised scandal, every shadow concealed a secret and every curve seemed determined to offend someone.

I have a soft spot for that.

These pieces borrow the language of vintage pulp, not to celebrate nostalgia but to poke fun at the theatre of desire. We spend an astonishing amount of time pretending the human body is either sacred or scandalous, when in reality it is mostly just trying to get comfortable.

The grotesque has always amused me because it reminds us how thin the line is between elegance and absurdity. Shift the perspective ever so slightly and seduction becomes comedy. Beauty becomes caricature. Suddenly the joke is on us.

Maybe that is why I enjoy making these. They are less interested in provocation than in deflating it. A reminder that even our greatest temptations and taboos are wonderfully ridiculous when viewed from a safe distance.

We are strange little creatures, endlessly scandalised by the same things that brought us into existence.

That has always struck me as funny.
