A very interesting peace of knowledge to take into account. Although, depending on the country, it is not the data that the company can reveal but only the meta-data, basically a description of the data.

The introductory post for that can be found here: I’m going on an adventure: Work Experience @ Penguin in Editorial! I worked with Penguin’s Vintage branch for two weeks from the 13th-24th March. Data & Privacy Policy: An Unlikely Avenue for Advertising
Data & Privacy Policy: An Unlikely Avenue for Advertising
There was a time when it was difficult to sift through or understand the Terms of Use or Data/Privacy Policy of organizations online. The difficulty was double edged, on one end, it allowed for a specificity of rights (for both the user and the corporation) and on the other end it was damn near impossible for the consumer to decode. Just called my local Senators about the bullshit meta-data retention scheme that Labor just folded on and are giving in to Tone. I've never called them before so it was a bit nerve wracking but worth it. Hopefully if enough people do it they can flip this before we end up having our every move for the last 2 years on file with no warrant needed to access.
If you're feeling up to it PLEASE call your local. It only takes a minute to say you're disappointed and think it's rubbish that you the consumer might have to pay more in internet fees because they're spying on me! phone numbers here - http://www.reddit.com/r/australia/comments/2xalih/metadata_retention_laws_will_pass_as_labor_folds/coyeqcj
De-Identification: A Critical Debate
De-Identification: A Critical Debate
Two new words for this tech pros vocabulary this week: De-identfication and re-identification.
Here’s how i get my hands around it. The label reads “squeezed from fresh oranges. Not from concentrate”. OK. Here goes.
Your data – and, potentially, location – is stripped from source and probably path information BEFORE it is stored. Then, after storage (not caching), the data is provided…
