#2363 - Mesocyphon sp.
A Marsh Beetle (Scirtidae), so-called because the larvae are usually found in stagnant water, and the adults in decomposing vegetation near the water's edge. Some prefer flowing water, which may have been the case here. 126 species of Scirtidae are recorded for New Zealand, all endemic.
