I thought that it looked the other way, with mass over population in the tail of the train, and wide spaces (as wide as you can get whilst still being confined to a train carriage) available for a small number of people. From what I observed, had the population of the front been the same as that of the back, there would have been a significantly higher number of people seen as they moved through the train. Or, at least, a higher number in menial work positions.

Because as they make their way through the front carriages, as I said before, the only crowded room was the night club, and even that wasn’t crowded in the way the tail sections were. Tail sectioners, when counted, lined up wall to wall, the rows stretching back pretty much as far as the eye can see, if I’m remembering correctly. That’s at least most of one train carriage completely filled with people. Any other way, yes, would have made the social metaphor awkward. Also,

I don’t actually know. I would assume, by the apparently regular culling, that there’s an over population problem in the back of the train. During the movie it looks like there may be less people in the front of the train (though this could just be an issue of space- they have more space in the front, though the spaces we see aren’t heavily occupied either), and apart from the night club scene (where the lighting makes it pretty difficult to discern ages) none of the people we see in the front of the train (outside of the one, small, classroom) look young enough to have been born on the train, that I remember of the cuff anyway. So, 17+ only. Does this mean they’re keeping their population control at the front strict, as compared to back where all they count is the numbers?

Maybe they have some sort of breeding program? Only certain people allowed to produce offspring, perhaps? People with genetic potential, or without ‘defects’? This could actually be used as another propaganda tool, like, ‘look at the way we are reproducing and continuing the species, with order, everyone in their place, unlike the people in the back of the train.’

Where do all the service workers come from? Some would be taken from the back of the train, like the violinist, due to their specialised skill set, but what about the people doing the agricultural work? Or tailoring? Were they hired by Wilson prior to the nuclear winter? Were they a part of the tail, originally? Singled out as they boarded? Perhaps they bore witness to the travesty of the first days in the tail and were all too happy to leave? Maybe they had a ticket, came into the front, and then took up their old jobs to have something to do? There certainly doesn’t seem to be any middle class. And what about Nam? How did this security expert arrive on the train? Was he hired by Wilson? So many questions about the population.

This got out of hand.
