the farm i volunteer at has a sizeable area dedicated to bunnies where they can hop around and play and sleep, etc.
but something that apparently happens all too often, is bunny owners who want to get rid of their pet, coming to the farm and leaving it there. because hey! bunny area! full of bunnies! one more couldn't hurt, right?
...completely ignoring the fact that dropping a new bunny in a group will most likely result in bunny fratricide. yikes, indeed.
so these bunbuns are put in separate cages and, since the farm can't really put them anywhere properly, are sold to the chicken farmer whenever he comes by, to go to the slaughterhouse. yikes, once more.
there's one bunny who's been there for a while and she's the cutest little thing; creamy fur and big shiny eyes, but she's petrified of humans and overly stressed, and just freezes up whenever you touch her, doesn't even fight back. i don't want her stressful life to end in a slaughterhouse so... i e-mailed the farm this weekend and they were more than alright with me taking the bunny off their hands.
i'll be picking her up this week. she's rather old and 50% Pure Stress, so i don't know how long she'll be with me, but i just hope she can have a calm retirement in my backyard.
