Guys! I just had an idea!
Imagine mer jack abbot gets hurt one day, maybe he got into a fight with an orca, or got tossed around during a storm, and ends up with a severely hurt tail. He thinks he's done for when marine biologist Robby and/ or Dennis find him and help him recover.
Jack's tail is damaged beyond repair, but instead of giving up the others help develop new technology to help jack swim. (I imagine there isn't really this sort of thing previously made for mer-folk, as they usually keep to themselves) I imagine they make a prosthetic tail for him not based on/ inspired by the ones made for dolphins and alike with damaged/ no tails in captivity.
And then he decides they are now his mates and they all live happily ever after :3
