This post is going to be a review of the Middle East version of project runway. It's a fashion design contest that brings the best fashion designers to compete and explode their creativity. The challenges are extraordinary and unconventional and usually with a tricky twist. The winner of the season is awarded by international brands and is featured in global fashion magazines. After watching the first episode yesterday, I think the season is holding lots of surprises. As the contestants are from across the Arab world, each and every one of them has a different background and experience. Which is the most important element in fashion TV shows to keep you inspired and captivated. From an Arab speaker perspective, I struggled a lot to understand their accents. I don't mean their original arabic accent, it's the mixture of English, French and Arabic and their effects on their mother tongue. The programme ended up by a terrible pronunciation of Arabic words and a translation of the contestants' speech. Talking about translation brings me to my next point, which is the translation of slogans. In the original copy of the American Project Runway, Heidi Klum (the German model and the host of the show) usually say to the looser "Good bye" in German, soon this sentence became a slogan she repeats every episode. In our version, they tried to come up with a similar concept but the result wasn't satisfying, literally translated "the challenge didn't fit you" what a motivating statement. 😳 In order to popularize the show, the producers somehow decided to convert all sentences said by the participants into twitter hashtags. I'm not sure if all new programmes do it but I find it annoying. Some sentences doesn't make sense and others are just a general statement that won't relate nor motivate anyone to tweet about it. To sum up, the show is promising and filled with innovative designs. The designers have the desire of winning from the beginning and their excitement is translated into beautiful garments. Apart from the terrible language that's produced during the show, I personally think that I'm going to pick up some words in other languages or accents. So far, they've picked the perfect guests which makes me Look forward to watching the next episode aired on MBC4 on Saturday at 9pm. Have an inspiring day..
