Latvian Mythology: Meness

Meness was the god of the Moon, and husband of Saule, the sun. In some versions of his story, he is married to Saule, the sun (though most of these versions come originally from Lithuanian mythology). In that version Meness falls for Auseklis, or the celestial body Venus, and is punished by the thunder god Perkons for his infidelity.

The story goes that Meness, the moon, and Saule, the sun, were husband and wife. However, then Meness caught sight of Auseklis, or the planet Venus, and fell instantly in love with him. Of course, he didn’t get away with this infidelity, and the thunder god Perkons decided to punish him. The nature of the punishment is disputed. Some accounts describe Meness being cut in half, but because he didn’t learn his lesson, the process was repeated every month, hence the phases of the moon. Another version simply says that Saule and Meness divorced, but they took it in turns to see their daughter,  Žemyna, creating day and night.

The Star reversed speaks of blockages, usually creative or emotional. There’s a feeling of wanting to move on from something. You’ve been uninspired, unmotivated. Perhaps you’ve felt you should go down a certain path because it’s what was “right”, but you could never create a genuine connection or liking for it.

The Queen of Swords reversed adds the image of one who is disconnected from their emotions. You can come off as rude or distant, and might be resistant to any criticisms you’re given.

Meness seems to be saying that He sees you as grudging, as one who has set themselves on a path they do not want, but you’re in denial and vehemently defend your decisions from others despite the fact the disinterest is obvious.
