Today 80 years ago started the Bombing of Barcelona, a series of Nationalist airstrikes by German and Italian planes, which took place from 16 to 18 March 1938, during the Spanish Civil War. Up to 1,300 people were killed and at least 2,000 wounded. The first raid came at 10:00 of 16 March and after that, there were 17 air raids at three hour intervals until 03:00 in the morning of 18 March. Barcelona had little anti-aircraft artillery and no fighter cover. It was the perfect laboratory for later WW2 bombings like Rotterdam. Today we see the even devastating and cruel effects on the civil populations of the bombings in Syria. Syria has to bear a civil war for 7 years now. The Spanish Civil War lasted 3 years, enough to divide the country in a way, that has its consequences to this day. I can’t imagine what it must be doing to the Syrian people right know, and how long will it take them to be able to live together in peace. On this image you see the Fossar de la Pedrera (Montjuïc), Barcelona. The disused quarry contains the remains of thousands of people from both sides: victims of the anti-fascist militias, of the events of May 1937, of the bombing of Barcelona by Italian and German planes between 16 and 18 March, 1938 and 3,400 victims of Francoist executions between 1939 and 1952. Bodies would be slid down a plank into a prepared pit and covered with quicklime. This image is part of my current book project Memoria Perdida. I would appreciate your support for the crowdfunding campaign (only 3 days to go).
