Chapter 1- Prologue
Season 8 episode 2 scene rewriting. "When I heard you named Tyrion your Hand, it broke my heart."
A winter goddess. Jorah couldn’t get the thought out of his head as she stood angrily in front of him. For all of his experience with angry women, he can’t bring himself to understand why she was fuming. Her glare was so heated he was surprised that she wasn’t melting the snow.
Jorah chose to bring it up. The most difficult and embarrassing piece of their friendship was his failure to her. She forgave him, she said, was long ago and long forgiven.
So he chose to try. After sharing his emotions, after her knowing that he loves her. He tried taking a step further by telling her how brokenhearted he was that she didn’t choose him as her hand. But she had changed, the topic of his adoration for her was as distant as his failure. Someone else had filled her heart in his place, he was only a knight to her once again. A loyal dog.
Jorah felt a little piece of him snap. A very distinct part of his soul. Hope. It blew in the wind as he walked from her room. The emptiness clung to him as he took the many stairs down to his own. Her words concerned him. Beyond the brokenness of his own heart, he sensed something unnerving in his Queens eyes. Something ancestral and angry.
Had his blinding love prevented him from initially spotting it? Was it new? Had it flourished in the lack of his presence? He prided himself in being able to tame the dragon inside of her, even if he never had the chance to tame the one that others had the honor of..experiencing.
But he had been gone too long. The dragon was festering and clawing its way out of her. Encouraged by every order of killing that she proclaimed, of mercy that she pushed aside. He couldn’t say much, as he allowed his bearish self loose more than once, loving the freedom that it brought, but he had learned how to reign it in, to control it.
So he did the worst thing he could think of for her, walk away. Provide advice and leave. He could no longer proclaim his love through affirmations and adoration, he was done.
Jorah felt pathetic walking back to his room like he finally lost ground in a battle that he had long been fighting. He had spent many years on this earth, he was going grey for god's sake and he was feeling like this over a broken heart. He closed his door and shed his layers, shivering against the cold of his room.
Daenerys felt like she was missing something. The conversation with Jorah felt normal, if not a little strained, but it had been like that since he left. It’s true, she had forgiven him, there was no longer a weight between them anymore. But when she had talked to him in the past she felt filled, and satisfied, and now from the moment she walked away, she felt her heart empty. He was always a steady source of comfort for her. From the way he called her Khalessi to the way he stood in the room taking it over in even the most subtle way.
She found herself staring at the fire until there were embers. So much had changed since he was gone. She wrote off her emotions as the effect of the many changes that had happened within the past several months. Daenerys had forgiven Jorah, what else was there? Why did she feel so empty when he left? The embers blinked out as she readied herself for sleep.
