No Skid Marks
I thought I was living in the fast lane,
butĀ now it feels more like Iām insane,
Iām running out of freeway and
thereās no more exits up ahead.
Everything is a concrete gray blur,
if only I could find the hole made by
those who came before, maybe I
could survive this crash and burn.
Canāt look backĀ ācause theĀ rear-view mirror
is busted, the brakesĀ are gone,Ā the gas pedal
is jammed in the accelerateĀ position, and
the steering wheelĀ has finally come loose.
The cops just donāt care anymore because
they know Iām out of time, out of gas,
out of tricks, out of sass, and the
devilĀ is jumping for joy.
In the last few seconds left it looks like
Iāll be coasting the rest of the way
āintoĀ the middle of next weekā, as
my father used to say.
Never one to make a scene, I think Iāll
explode like confetti and leave the
pieces scattered next to all the other
driversĀ who missed their turn and
huriedĀ intoĀ eternity.
