Melissa is married and eight-months pregnant when the name appears on her wrist. It hits her like a bolt of lightning, and she drops the glass of OJ she was drinking. She watches it spill all over the floor and stick to the dirtier patches on the surface she can no longer scrub.
The funny thing about dead bodies, Stiles comes to realize, is that sometimes the more there are the less suspicious it looks. People have funny ideas about death coming in threes, about tragedy following people around, and god knows they love orphans. When her father drinks himself to death a year after her mother passes, the real explanation never enters their heads.
The Stilinski house was well-maintained and of a medium size, done in the Greek Revival style. It was quite different from Hale Manor, which had been designed not only to house a number of large packs when necessary, but to impress while doing so. It sat at the foot of an immense dark forest, and even the smaller lodge that had been built in the woods for hunting was on par with any house in the neighborhood.

She watches the shards of glass dance in the light, and takes them for some kind of omen.
Przemyslaw, she thinks, traces, though she can’t begin to pronounce it.
(Stiles’s, she will find out later, is on his chest, just over his heart. Hidden, but betraying its sincerity.)
