First lean hard into contrast. Only after you've done that should you add the rest of your vocal gradient. Know what your reader's inner eye notices first. It won't be "the" or "and" or "said." Compose your sentences around where you want that attention to be.

Next, what feelings (and images) are opposite each other? Those are compliments, just like in visual art. They'll emphasize difference. A monochrome arrangement in your sentences will be easier on the psyche but less stimulating.
