My First ER Procedures as a Resident One of the highlights of my very first shift as an emergency medicine resident was getting to perform several procedures. On day one, I performed an ultrasound-guided IV, an ocular ultrasound alongside my attending physician, and a laceration repair. 3 Level 1 Traumas Hit at Once The last hour of my very first shift as an emergency medicine resident took an unexpected turn when multiple Level 1 trauma patients arrived within minutes of each other. The emergency department instantly shifted into high gear as the team worked to stabilize critically ill patients, with some ultimately requiring transfer by helicopter. As a brand-new ER resident, my priority was continuing to care for my own patients while taking every opportunity to observe and learn from the trauma team.
