Anyone can practice healing magic. However those who become actual healers/mediwizards traditionally make a oath. Like how muggle doctors take the Hippocrates oath, healers take an unbreakable vow. This vow is called the Asclepius vow.

This vow is to heal the sick to the best of their abilities, never turn away a person in need, and most importantly never use your abilities to kill another human being.

Not all healers take this oath, but if a healer chooses not take this oath, they are looked down upon by the rest of the magical medic community. A healer who doesn’t take the vow is a sign of a bad healer.

Like with all unbreakable vows, if a healer breaks this vow, they die.

A mediwizard/mediwitch is the wizarding equivalent to a medic. Mediwizards work at St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. Mediwizards are also field doctors and they tend to injuries at events such as Quidditch Games, Magical Tournaments and other Wizarding Events.

3 PM - Tuesday - Transfiguration Classroom

Patrick McNally, a Northern Irish man who worked at St. Mungo's, was round with red cheeks and nose. He welcomed everyone with a hearty, booming hello, and then dove right in to talking about the qualifications of becoming a Mediwizard or a Healer.

He talked about the good sides of the job, and how it felt to be able to know you saved a life. The man also talked about the gore involved, and said that it wasn't a job for the particularly soft hearted when it came to blood and bones and guts. Laughing, he moved on to say that there are opportunities in the field outside of working in St. Mungo's or other hospitals--many Mediwizards work in other places like at Quidditch games (or with Quidditch teams), or with Dragon Keepers, or Curse Breakers, or any other profession that could lead to serious injury while on the job. Not only that, but there are also Mediwizards and Healers who work to further the practice of Healing Magic rather than using it themselves.
