Besides the initial amazement and bewilderment of the website I believe that Marshall McLuhan would simply view it as another form of media or a medium. By McLuhan’s own definition media is “an extension of man” or simply a tool for people to use to express themselves. Tumblr is the epitome of self expression and creation. Millions of people from many parts of the world log onto the website daily to share and create things that show others who they are. Users of the website are using it to extend themselves into places where they were previously unknown. Although, I do not believe that McLuhan would view the internet to be a form of media. The internet is just pure information like a light bulb, it in itself is not media. The internet may connect people like a railway, but it is not the locomotive. The railway itself is not the medium, the locomotive that uses the railway is the medium; tumblr is the locomotive that uses the internet as its railway. Tumblr is a form of media, while the internet is not, because the website is what allows the expression of one’s own ideas. While McLuhan would probably disagree that the internet itself is media, I do believe that he would qualify Tumblr as a form of media.
