Laverne Cox, Sam Feder: “Trans Lives Depend on Owning Our Stories”

Trans liberation is the latest frontline in the struggle for civil rights. In their new documentary, Disclosure, director Sam Feder and producer Amy Scholder use over a century’s worth of film to show that trans identities have long been at the center of our collective cultural history. They join four-time Emmy nominated actress and Emmy winning producer Laverne Cox in a groundbreaking conversation with Laura on how trans people are reclaiming their stories and transforming the power structures in Hollywood. They describe the experience of assembling the first majority trans film crew and interviewing an incredible range of trans actors and media critics to understand how media shapes attitudes, behaviors, and laws about gender and trans lives. With film history as a background, Laura and guests explore what’s next for trans liberation — and the bearing it has on the continuing struggle for human rights for all.

Since we are discussing how genders operate on the internet, I came across this video that feature several women in popular media and their response to the overly-sexual comments that they receive on their posts. 

 With the growing popularity of social media, more and more people are sharing content on social media platforms resulting in more and more comments both nasty and positive. Words like troll and cyber bully were not used in the 90′s, but now they are overwhelming used in our daily lives. Even though all genders face these issues, women seem to be the target especially women who are successful on the internet. Of course, this is due in part to the fact that women use social media more than men do. Many women put themselves out there on these platforms and receive very negative and disturbing comments. When it comes to men on the internet, it seems to be a trend that they seem to be more sexually harassing with their comments towards women. 

In a comedic way, the video shares the kinds of comments that these internet stars see on a daily basis from guy commenters. They have a few guys act as the commenters to show how creepy these kind of harassing comments are. Obviously, most of these comments have to do with boobs, masturbation, or porn. Apparently, the men are trying to compliment them with these sexual comments. When in reality, they are thoroughly disturbed the comments and the shear amount of them. Due to the exposure we have to these sorts of comments, we are somewhat to desensitized to this type of harassment. Since this is presented in a funny way, it is possible that this video could seem to be taking this issue too lightly causing in more comments of this nature. 

Why do you think men are so eager to harass these women on the internet? Is it a cultural issue or a more individualized issue? Do men think these comments are complimentary or negative?
