The funniest thing about the terminology people use to talk about music production is that so much of it is a metaphorical way of talking about programming. It’s all about signal flow. "Automation" has a specific meaning but it’s also a very clear metaphor. Much programming involves setting abstract "switches" to either on or off, just like "turning on or off an effect." It's just very clear that music producers are not usually people who also have engineering or programming backgrounds, they come from a music background.
