âNoâbut maybe dodging should be.â
Aureliaâs laugh slips out easy, almost fond, like sheâs trying to take the edge off a sentence that couldâve landed a lot harsher. She turns back to the sink as she speaks, holding the washcloth beneath the tap and sucking in a breath when the water hitsâbiting cold, sharp enough to wake the room up all on its own. The metal basin rattles softly as she adjusts the flow, then twists the cloth tight between her hands until water streams down her wrists and into the drain.
She keeps her back to him for a second longer than necessary.
âDonât get me wrong,â she continues, voice steady, practical, the way it always gets when sheâs trying to keep Robert from setting himself on fire for the greater good. âRefusing to give up? That partâs admirable. Legendary, even. Real Mecha Man branding.â
Another quick wring of the cloth. Another breath.
âBut you keep treating every problem like itâs a wall you have to punch through,â Aurelia says, finally glancing over her shoulder at him. Thereâs humor in her eyes, but concern tooâreal, unhidden. âAnd walls have a nasty habit of punching back.â
She turns fully then, crossing the short distance between them. The washcloth is cool in her hands as she lifts it toward him, careful, precise, like sheâs defusing something rather than tending to a cut. âThe world doesnât need you proving how hard you can take a hit,â she adds quietly. âWe need you thinking three steps ahead so you donât take one at all.â
The cloth presses gently against him. Her touch is all business, but her voice softens again, dropping into something almost teasing, like how she would speak to one of her little brothers.
âSo no,â Aurelia finishes, the corners of her mouth quirking into a small smile. âYou donât have to add âgiving upâ to your vocabulary. JustâŚmaybe start practicing evasive maneuvers. Preferably before I have to keep patching you up like I used to.â
