like, you never understand how much of your self worth and identity is wrapped up in your accomplishments, in being better, smarter, and ahead, until you fail. when mcvay talks about the sickening, all consuming disgust he felt, which was directed at everyone, but especially at himself, when he fails... i dunno. i get it buddy.

like he spent all this time repeating these mantras about being where your feet are, and process, and how players win games, not coaches. but deep down he felt like the win-loss column was a direct reflection of his self worth, even if it wasn't always a concious thought. and then letting that fear drive you to both success and the worst version of yourself. letting that fuel the "i can do this myself" attitude until he can't anymore. it's crazy to me STILL that the rams didn't even have an OC in 2018 and 2019, he was doing both jobs. robert mayes called him a supernova once, and i keep coming back to that.

and then very publicly (i guess only *very* publicly if you are obsessive about this like me) deciding to grow up. and doing that by delegating, by redefining how you talk to yourself... but also by returning to a younger, more naive version of yourself that maybe hadn't been so fucked up by the world yet. it's 2023. you've got 40 rookies on the roster going into camp. 14 will make it by cutdown day, tying an nfl record. you're gonna need to go back to basics, literally in some ways. why did you even love this to begin with? I think about sean saying there's no end point to being better. asking "how do I give myself and the people I’m around more grace to know that it really is about having a more full heart?". how do I be kind to myself, because i need to be kind to others.
