Her world was the Void. A sea of dark emptiness that stretched endlessly in all directions. It was the world that existed below the world. A world that she was alone in. At least she thought so. She'd never seen another living soul here any any that fell from the world above were instantly killed by the magic this place contained.

Kristin could feel the magic deep in her bones yet she remained untouched by it. She does not know why she is unaffected while everything else wasn't. It is a mystery she has yet to solve and she has tried.

She has traversed through the darkness, traveling for months, sometimes years. Sometimes, she ventures to it's surface to see if she can catch a glimpse of the world above. Sometimes all she can see is bedrock, the barrier that keeps the magic of her world contained, and sometimes she can see floating islands of white stone, there is no bedrock and the magic flows freely. She is able to fly up from the darkness and explore but all she ever finds are those of Ender kind. There are no other species here.

She longed to see the world above hers. To take in its beauty and its inhabitants.

One day, when she crests the surface of the darkness, she notices that there are holes in the bedrock, tiny little things that form an almost sphere-like shape but that is not what immediately grabs her attention. Standing on the ledge of one of the holes was a winged creature. He was dressed in shining gold and his wings were dark grayish with lighter gray patterns in the feathers.

Fascinated, she watched this creature as he cleared away more of the stone and looked down into the darkness with a look of determination.

Her curiosity rose. What was this creature doing? Her eyes widened when he stepped to the edge of the ledge before tipping forward and plunging down. She watched in horror, waiting for the magic of the Void to rise up and drain the life from this creature but it didn't. Dark gray wings spread wide and with a powerful flap of them and a joyful sound he was soaring over the sea of darkness.

She moved through the darkness, following this creatures as he flew above the Void without fear. She was in awe. Never in her life had she seen anything more magnificent or fearless than this creature.

Her admiration of him only grew when she watched him stoop low again, this time extending his hand down and letting it glide through the darkness of the Void. She watched the magic of the Void rise up and strain toward him to pull him down into its depths. Before the magic could fully take hold and drag him down though, he flapped his powerful wings again and pulled away, heading back to the ledge he dropped from.

He landed safely and perched there for a few moments. Kristen moved until she was directly below him, peering at him from the safety of the darkness. She noticed that his wings were shaking and she instantly feared that the Void's magic had harmed him in someway but that far quickly vanished when he threw his head back and the most beautiful sound Kristin had ever heard reached her ears. The creature was laughing.

Kristin doesn't know how long she watched the creature. The urge to speak to him was growing. She wanted to talk to this creature. She wanted to get to know him. She wanted to know his name.

She blinked and he was gone.

She felt disappointed for a split second before she realized something. The bedrock was not solid. For once in her life, she could leave the Void and see the overworld.
